Ad comparing Tennessee legislature to Taliban drawing criticism

NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

An advertisement comparing the Tennessee legislature to the Taliban is drawing stiff criticism.

Civil rights advocates say it's wrong and did more damage than good, but those behind the ad say it addresses a huge matter - women's rights - and voters need to know about it.

The almost full-page advertisement telling voters to "Vote no on the Tennessee Taliban Amendment" ran in newspapers across the state.

In the Knoxville News Sentinel, the ad was accompanied by an illustration of a man wearing a turban stepping on a woman.

"What that automatically as a woman signals to me is I need to fear any man who has a turban on. Forget that the turban could be worn by Muslims, Christians, Jews, Sikhs, whatever religious affiliation from the Middle East," said Remziya Suleyman, director of policy for the American Center for Outreach, a Nashville-based education and advocacy organization.

Suleyman says the advertisement is offensive.

"They're entitled to free speech, but I think we also have an obligation when we are leading political campaigns to promote diversity," she said.

Tennesseans for Preservation of Personal Privacy paid for the ad, which urges voters to say no to Amendment 1. A "yes" vote would give lawmakers more authority to regulate and restrict abortion.

Michael Kaplan, an attorney with the nonprofit organization, says the ad was to alert voters about Amendment 1 and "it was not meant in any way to insult the Muslim population."

Kaplan says the organization exercised its right to free speech and the ad is not an ethics violation.

The nonprofit has not been around long. Kaplan says he filed the paperwork with the state in April.

Text of Amendment 1

Nothing in this Constitution secures or protects a right to abortion or requires the funding of an abortion. The people retain the right through their elected state representatives and state senators to enact, amend, or repeal statutes regarding abortion, including, but not limited to, circumstances of pregnancy resulting from rape or incest or when necessary to save the life of the mother.[2]

There is no Amendment giving women the right to murder babies. Why did they include it in the cartoon?

Why did they include it in the cartoon?

You're missing their stupid point. Which is not a bad thing.

“Tennesseans for Preservation of Personal Privacy paid for the ad”

I love the euphemisms the Left contrives to promote the murder of the unborn.

2003-2011, I was in Afghanistan. I know the Taliban.

Were any of the people who contrived this advertisement ever in contact with the Taliban?

I would think that unlikely. But, they are real good at murdering babies in the womb. That takes a lot of courage, scrape out pieces of babies, crush their skulls, and then release the “patient” to a lifetime of guilt and likely permanent physical damage to their reproductive capacity.

Which, if they find they are unable to have a child when they deem it convenient and they they no longer can, well, that is tragic too.

Murdering the child in the womb does have consequences. But the “professionals” who commit the murder really don’t worry about it very much or they would not do it.

The art and jingoistic style is reminiscent of campaign broadsides and cartoons in the mid to late 1800’s.

Politics were much rougher back then and lies/slander much more difficult to respond to.

This one is poorly done and its hysterical message will probably cause more of the uninformed to investigate what the amendment actually says than it will stampede them to the polls in opposition.

These same leftists wouldn’t say or do anything about an actual Taliban in Tennessee. The imagery shows how they do not understand their opposition. While I generally loathe the “civil rights” grievance industry, it’s fun when they turn on their own.

Good comments. In the link I posted above, there is one poll that indicates the is opposed by 3/4 of those asked.

I am always suspicious of any and all polls - the question is asked in a way to get the answer desired, in many instances.

But, I suspect there may be some potential problems under the surface. I have long suspected that many who publicly identify as pro life have a private reservation (”unless I REALLY need one”)

The Amendment passed with substantial majorities in the Legislature. It will be interesting to follow this one.

Abortion is federal. “Gay” marriage is federal. Whatever else a state, for instance TN where I live, decides for their own laws will be abrogated by a federal judge.

The Left is incessant, focused and will never change.

Everything is suspect in the end. I like Chris Plant on Talk Radio.

LOL. Muslim activists are offended by an over-the-top pro-abortion advocacy add that suggestst that Muslims treat women like dirt. Who wins this clash of liberal constituencies? Pass the popcorn!!

Offending our Islamic Tennesseeans? That is not nice.

We should make sure this gets reproduced everywhere.

Background: Court rulings have decided that the Tennessee constitution protects "a right to abortion" more expansive even than than that at the Federal level. Tennessee is basically prevented from regulating abortion at all by that ruling.

The proposed amendment, which will go to the voters for approval this fall, negates that supposed protection in our state constitution.

The opposition needs to make ads with an actual photo of an abortionist stabbing a baby

But this makes no sense. Democrats love Sharia Law and the Taliban.
