Detroit is the rickety handcart that everybody likes to point at and laugh. Unfortunately, there’s a locomotive bearing down on us from behind in the form of cities like Chicago, NY and LA.

Illinois is seriously considering a millionaire tax to add an extra tax on people just because they’re rich. Wealth is also tiptoeing away from NY for the same reasons. Fortunately at least some of that money is finding its way to Detroit due to the economic direction of the state overall.

A couple of years ago they said they would never run another Grand Prix race on Belle Isle but they’re running one this weekend with mutterings of an F-1 race in the future. Roger Penske is a big mover and shaker there. He speaks of recreating Dubai here.

I’ve got friends who have finally had it and are moving out. They said just a simple thing like copper wires on a roof air conditioner on the top of a local 7/11 are stolen every month...

the place is a lawless blight.. let it go back to nature, we it appears to be doing, right quick.

Everybody should do a Google Earth search of Detroit like I did yesterday. Amazing views.. amazing but not good.

I’d love to see a resurgent Detroit build on a solid capitalist foundation. It once was a beautiful city. Can be again. Quite a lot of work to get there, though.

Big bucks in town this weekend.

Even the new mayor is starting to suggest that attracting more business might make more sense than taking more money from the businesses already in town.

“I’ve been looking around in cities all across the nation in google street view and I’m finding areas like that in pretty much all medium to large cities.”

There were many areas in Pittsburgh that resembled typical Detroit photos after the steel industry collapsed. Some are still like that to this day. Pittsburgh’s South Side suffered terribly and featured hundreds of dilapidated mill homes that weren’t selling for squat throughout the 80s and early 90s.

These days, those same mill homes, nominally restored, can fetch you $250K or more :-). The area has been totally revitalized.

I’d never live in South Side myself, but I’m also quite ticked for not taking some risk back then as I don’t hate the area that much :-). If I knew more about Detroit, I’d certainly invest something ... you’d be amazed how quickly things can turn around.

Having said that, I love that “Hiroshima” comparison :-).

While it pisses me off, I have to laugh at all the Detroit haters who are absolutely clueless as to what is going on in Detroit. If I was in my 20's or 30's and had the cash, I'd be buying up properties on Detroit's near east side as fast as I could afford them.

Mega $$$ investors are doing just that and these are folks who know exactly what they're doing and don't throw their money away on whims.

I have a black friend who was a diemaker at my plant on Connor and Charlevoix. He and his wife also had 5 hair studios around the city and he and his family have a suite at Cobo arena............

Following the closing of our plant in Dec. of 2006, he bought a building down on Griswold.........

LOL what a pathetic ploy to post yet one more website that tells you what you want to hear.

I used to believe that old saying “If you want to anger a liberal, tell them the truth. If you want to anger a conservative lie to them.” Now I realize that conservatives are no more interested in the truth than liberals.

Nothing but pathetic cowards.

I think the problem in Detroit involves the back taxes on the properties. You can buy the house for a dollar, but you are also buying the tax liability.

A couple of years ago they said they would never run another Grand Prix race on Belle Isle but they’re running one this weekend

And not to mention that Belle Isle has now been taken over by the state of Michigan and is being patrolled by the MI state police............

If conservatives had any brains they would recognize the value of holding the northern end of the busiest freight corridor on the continent. There is a LOT of money available in Detroit if not for the corruption.

Instead they want to force democrats to keep it and keep funding themselves off it. Pure genius.

Fortunately there are a lot smarter people paying attention to what’s going on and are investing the money where they know its effective. On the political side I don’t agree with everything Rick Snyder does in Detroit but at least he has the stones to do something unlike those who have done nothing for decades.

Dan Gilbert and Roger Penske are among the primary promoters of the city and are having a fair amount of success attracting big money to downtown. Mike Ilitch alone spent some $11 million renovating the FOX theater which is probably the single finest concert hall on the planet.

You’ve also got JP Morgan, Ernst & Young, Quicken etc transferring people to Detroit and helping them to rebuild neighborhoods.

There is just something morally wrong with wanting destruction of one of America’s cities and I don’t love cities.

As always, my inspiration.
