WASHINGTON (AP) -- The only American soldier held prisoner in Afghanistan has been freed and is back in U.S. custody after nearly five years of captivity, U.S. officials said Saturday.

The officials said the Taliban agreed to turn over Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl in exchange for the release of five Afghan detainees from the U.S. prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. The transfers happened after a week of intense negotiations mediated by

So we negotiated with terrorists, and sent some of their buddies back to them which as we know end up back on the field killing our boys.

Fantastic.

“Several dozen U.S. special operations forces flew into Afghanistan by helicopter and made the transfer with the approximately 18 Taliban members. The official said the commandos were on the ground for a short time before lifting off with Bergdahl.”

Luckily we designated the group in 2012 a terrorist entity so its clear we’re negotiating with terrorists. I thought we didn’t do that.

This is, as usual, a victory for AQ - and the Taliban. They’ve wanted this “exchange” since the beginning, and since the Taliban now knows that it has won in Afghanistan and essentially controls the country, they’re out there high-fiving each other as we speak.

He’s the guy that rather mysteriously “wandered off”, correct?

Notwithstanding his possible mental problems ... he should be classified and held accountable as a deserter. Meanwhile the military promoted him during his "absence." Significant to this sordid situation, it has been reported that good soldiers died while attempting to rescue him.

No doubt Obama and Co. will now welcome this traitor home as a hero while true American heroes are putting their lives on the line every day in that wretched country.

“what’s coming Monday”

Obama’s draconian regulation of American coal plants is coming next week. Rumors of Cap and Trade via Executive Order are also a possibility.

My guess is that the Gov. knew where this soldier was for years but did not mount a rescue mission and kept his capture as a political expedient to be exploited at the right time. Must be the right time!

5 years is a lot of time to brain wash a person... Just saying. A lot of unanswered questions on this one.

I hadn’t thought of it like that. Whatever Obama’s motivations are, he is truly the worst President ever.

"We trade FIVE terrorists in Gitmo for one US soldier...after five years. What a group we have in charge."

Well at least it wasn't 500 Islamic terrorists for the dead body of a soldier like liberal Israeli PMs have done in the past.

So there is the possibility that we exchanged a deserter and collaborator foe five Gitmo terrorists. This sure sounds like an exchange that Obama must love.

If you read the article it lists the 5 prisoners released. They were the 5 most senior people held at Gitmo, all Taliban commanders, and one who had direct ties to Osama.

Many people will die because these 5 were released.

I’m sorry, that was Putin who said that. And then he said, “We destroy them”.

Although I’m very pleased that we got the soldier back, this was a Bad Idea. Watch.

Here's a link to a redacted document, as released by the FBI, after a controversial Rolling Stone article prompted inquiries about this guy after he walked away from his post. Sorry, but I couldn't figure out how to make it a clickable link... but you can copy and paste it in your browser if interested.

So you think that (by comparison) this is a good deal? trading a deserter for five top level AQ leaders? Really?

I thought we didn’t negotiate with terrorists?

Oh, that was so very long ago. You know, before Obama...
