A litany of 'thou shalt nots': Catholic teachers challenge morality clause

If you want to teach at a Catholic school in the Archdiocese of Cincinnati, regardless of your religion, you must be willing to sign a detailed morality clause that critics say focuses on "pelvic issues."

The revised contracts forbid teachers from -- among other things -- living together or having sex outside of marriage, using in-vitro fertilization, a gay "lifestyle," or publicly supporting any of those things.

The system's 2,200 current teachers must sign the agreement to stay on the job.

"It is an embarrassment and a scandal, and will drive even more Catholics away from an institution so out of touch with its times," said Robert Hague, a high school English teacher for 50 years.

Teacher to boss: 'Have you no shame?'

He's leaving his job rather than sign because he's opposed to "the language, the intent, and the tone of this contract," he says.

The revised morality clause goes beyond more general standard language requiring teachers -- Catholic or not -- to adhere to Catholic doctrine.

The first tier scoundrels will leave immediately, and the second tier scoundrels will be found out and dismissed; but the end result will be a much better and stronger institution.

However, in “version 2” of the morality clause should include an agreement that if found in variance, they agree to forfeit “tenure and any and all accrued benefits”, as well as a binding arbitration clause if they challenge their dismissal. With the arbitrator appointed by the bishop of that diocese.

I can't decide if I should curse or pray for this guy.The one thing I *won't* do is agree with him.

I live an hour or so from Cincy, and there is no outcry around here about the Catholic schools wanting to be Catholic.

And in order to forbid things, you pretty much have to list what you don’t want. A long list of what you do want isn’t helpful at all in controlling behavior you do not want.

Every behavior the Catholics do NOT want is a behavior that is contrary to Catholic teaching.

That should not be an “aha” moment.

this year’s gay pride in cincy is going to be a protest against the teacher contracts. the media is trying to put public pressure to change with the times.

I think the problem is that these objectors are unprincipled.

“regardless of your religion”

It’s such an obvious question - “regardless of your religion” - if you’re not Catholic, why would you want to teach at a Catholic school? Makes no sense.

“But the Catholic colleges and universities? They can be as sick and pervserse as any state or public school.”

How about the headquarters themselves? The ones where molesters were shuffled around and such; I applaud the diocese for doing this, but they’d best make sure their own house (offices) are in order...

“Why does this idiot English teacher think Catholic parents send their kids to Catholic School in the first place? To learn about how to sin against their religion?”

Many parents (Catholic or not) use Catholic schools just to avoid the public schools; too often the parents themselves aren’t in it for the religion itself. Here in NJ our Catholic school system was destroyed because the Church didn;t seem that interested in saving them with pushing for vouchers or something similar (our public school taxes make it practically to afford any private school). They focused on some urban efforts (in which many students weren;t Catholic anyway), but left the suburban Catholic populations on their own.

I asked an older friend of mine who is an avid Bingo player why her parish still ran it (usually a means of subsidizing a school) if their school closed a few years ago; she had no idea what they were using the money for at this point.

These recent news stories about the falling percentage of Hispanics that belong to the Catholic Church is related to this as well; Catholic education would inspire members to keep the faith as they got older, but when the schools were closed and the priests were just asking Hispanic families for money to support the priests in the rectory I guess some just walked away...

My experience in the Catholic Church is that the Hispanics give little money to the Church. The Bishops must be impressed with the piety of the few.

“It is an embarrassment and a scandal, and will drive even more Catholics away from an institution so out of touch with its times,” said Robert Hague, a high school English teacher for 50 years.

Seems a little strange that anyone could be outraged that teaching in a Catholic school requires being a Catholic.

God’s people are not supposed to follow the whims of the cultures. They are to be true to God, true to the revealed Word, true to the history and tradition of the Church.

No matter which phony Christian church proclaims homosexuality to be ok, they are still speaking lies, and they have not changed God’s eternal Word which is so clear on the subject that it makes their deception obvious.

“My experience in the Catholic Church is that the Hispanics give little money to the Church. The Bishops must be impressed with the piety of the few.”

I;ve heard a couple of explanations for that; one was that they come from countries where the clergy is subsidized by the government (though I don’t believe that has been true for some time). More likely is that since they’ve been brought here to replace our black underclass, they simply don’t have the means anyway.

“we’re all being asked to act out of fear because the lawyers have taken over,” Rosen added.

Nonsense. You’re being required to make a choice: conform to the standards of your employer, or seek other employment.

It is really creepy that you would use the word “fear” to describe your feelings at confronting morality, though.

Because, not to excuse, the colleges are institutionalized extensions of liberalism — the local schools have managed to sidestep the infestation.
