The War on Coal? Wyoming's future is at stake in the debate on coal
Wyoming Star-Tribune ^ | May 31, 2014 | By BENJAMIN STORROW

There is little doubt among the students in Brandon Cone’s engineering class at Campbell County High School that a war is being waged against coal. The children of the mechanics who fix the mines’ great diesel trucks, the welders who staff their machine shops and the railroad employees who see the final product shipped across the country and beyond have obvious pride in the local industry.

“We power a lot of the country just from Gillette,” said Corey Silver, a junior whose father works at the Cordero Rojo mine, a comment widely echoed by his peers.

The students’ pride in the coal industry is matched only by their frustration with its critics. Coal, in their view, is misunderstood. It is not as dirty as its opponents make it out to be.

“It’s really actually clean,” explained Silver’s classmate Tanner Luthy. “There are so many filters on it. By the time any of the harmful, or what could be harmful gases, reach the atmosphere they are so little or so diluted it doesn’t even matter.”

And climate change, to the extent it exists, is a natural process, they say.

The bad news for the fellows in this article is that the Obama administration is waging a war on coal here in the U.S.

The good news is that China, India, and other countries with something like 60% of the world's population isn't held to any standards when it comes to the burning of fossil fuels.

The really good news is that all of these countries are building coal-fired power plants like there's no tomorrow.

The really, really good news is that U.S. coal mines are shipping a lot of coal overseas to these countries so they can burn coal in their new plants ... since the coal that they burn there apparently doesn't cause global warming climate change.

Being the cynical person that I am, it is my firm belief that the real story behind trying to shut down American coal companies is so China can buy up all the assets cheap.

China would love to have the relatively cheap and clean coal that is American coals instead of having to use their third-rate dirty coal.

I will vote for any pro-life, pro-gun, anti socialized medicine, anti-amnesty, smaller government candidate.

If the republicans happen to run a candidate like that, they can have my vote.

If they don't, I won't.

In a May news conference, Gov. Matt Mead declared coal’s troubles a “concern,” saying he worried the industry’s woes could negatively affect the state’s budget. The governor has involved Wyoming in a dozen lawsuits against the EPA during his tenure, many concerning air pollution at coal-fired power plants.

“I do think there is a war on coal” Mead said.

The Obama administration, for its part, says there is no such war. “Coal is part of the energy mix today, and it will be for decades into the future,” EPA administrator Gina McCarthy told Basin Electric Power Cooperative employees during a February visit to the company’s Synfuels plant in Beulah, North Dakota.

I'm relieved. The Obama administration assures me there's no war on coal. Thank goodness my electric rates aren't going to "necessarily skyrocket."

I'm also smug and happy with the Obama assurances that I can keep my doc, my deductible, my premiums, and my insurance company.

A coal-fired plant's CO2 emissions are approximately double that of a gas-fired plant. Sequestration/capture is very expensive, as the article points out. However, CO2 is just a global warming issue, which we agree is a red herring. A modern coal plant removes the harmful gases and particulates from the flue gas: N2, H2O, O2, NOx, SOx and fly ash. CO2 sequestration/capture has no environmental value and no economic value other than for petroleum extraction. I have been unable to find data on the cost per MW of capacity of a new coal-fired plant that removes these gases and particulates, but does not sequester/capture CO2.

Absent the global warming scare about CO2, a new coal-fired plant, which removes all emissions harmful to health, has a lower cost per KWH of output than a new gas-fired plant.

There is therefore no rationale for the about-to-be-proposed EPA regulations. If implemented, they should be removed by a future Republican administration.

Wyoming’s a red state. To this administration, what difference does it make?
