Establishment Republican Neel Kashkari (R) has pulled ahead of controversial California state Assemblyman Tim Donnelly (R) ahead of Tuesday's all-party primary, according to a new poll conducted for the Los Angeles Times.

Kashkari leads Donnelly among likely voters with 18 percent of the vote to 13 percent, the first time the former assistant Treasury secretary has had a lead in the Republican field. California Gov. Jerry Brown (D) was at 50 percent in the live-caller poll, conducted for the Times and the University of Southern California by Greenberg Quinlan Rosner Research. Some Republicans have been panicked about having Donnelly at the top of the ticket — and what effect he could have on down-ticket Republicans. California has the largest number of competitive House races in the country.
The USC Dornsife/Los Angeles Times poll surveyed 1,511 registered voters from May 21-28, and the likely voter sample has a margin of error of plus or minus 4.4 percentage points.

Somebody correct me if I’m wrong, but if Brown gets 50% + 1 in tomorrow’s primary, then there is no general election, and Brown is re-elected based on this open primary. Holding Brown under 50% would be great to see, so we can have an actual campaign leading up to November.

I hope you’re right! Kashkari voted for Obama. He’s like Wendell Willkie. But the republicans are all for him because he’s not conservative.

As I understand California, that’s how it works, since the majority of the people will have made their decision.

I just got a robocall from Mitt Romney urging me to join him, Condie Rice and Petie Wilson to vote for Kashkari.

The two candidates who get the most votes will face each other in November, regardless of party affiliation. Brown will win in November no matter what. Voting in California is like voting in North Korea. The outcome is a forgone conclusion.

I know California is a liberal state, and Democrats have consolidated power. So Brown is a big favorite for re-election. But I look forward to having a campaign against him. If nothing else, may tie down some Democrat resources to ensure comfortable re-election. Tying down those resources could indirectly help in other elections, and in other states.
