The hiring process at AGI Envirotank, a small company in Biggar, Sask., that manufactures oil storage tanks, can be brutal. Jeff Burton, the owner and director of operations, says he will often place an ad for, say, a welder or a drafts person — jobs that pay as much as $35 an hour — and then he will wait.
And wait.
Not too many young people, it seems, are eager to put down roots in this rural community of 2,200 about 100 kms west of Saskatoon, where the nightlife consists of knocking off work at 5 p.m., sharp, and either heading home to your family or heading out to go hunting or fishing.
But then times change, as do job advertisements, as do the strategies behind them, and David Burton, Jeff’s father and AGI’s former owner, had a brilliant thought a few weeks ago: AGI was hiring, Biggar, the town, was reviving its senior hockey team, the Biggar Nationals, after a three-year hiatus. So, why not wed the two together — full-time employment plus the opportunity to play seriously competitive hockey — into a single want ad?
The resulting job listing appeared May 26 on an Internet recruiting site and consisted of three criteria for potential applicants to meet, with the first being a willingness to relocate and the second being an ability to play hockey well. (The employer’s third-desired quality was more run-of-the-mill, emphasizing that all candidates must be “motivated, self starters looking to establish a long-term career.”)
“The response to the ad has been incredible,” Jeff Burton says. “We received about 24 applications last week, which is good, since we’ve put out ads before and got zero.

U.S. cities are willing to pay bigger bucks to hire the necessary Canucks to keep the cup south of the border.
The same, or more money to be made in Edmonchuck, Calgary or Ft. McMoney, or even in Saskatoon.
All the top players in the NHL are Canadians, what’s up with that? heh

I was thinking that in any oil patch jobs, $35/hr woulds be just for an apprentice welder. If he had a high pressure red seal, he’d be looking upwards of $75/hr, especially up north, and as many hours /week as he liked @ double time. Rotten, dirty and dangerous job, but you can’t complain about the pay.
not 35 an hour for an apprentice. 75 an hour would be a welder contractor, not an employee rate, though most guys do just contract out.
Most of overtime I see is time and a half, but even then that is already plenty for the government to come and take 40%.
those 11pm ice times on school nights have got to be a killer.
Sorry dude, but $35 an hour isn’t going to compete with the oil patch jobs.
The winners would rather play for Americans.
Cost of living is likely substantially lower.
