The Pentagon on several occasions had ground-level intelligence on where ArmySgt. Bowe Bergdahl was being held captive at various times down to how many gunmen were guarding him but special operations commanders repeatedly shelved rescue missions because they didnt want to risk casualties for a man they believed to be a deserter, sources familiar with the mission plans said.
Commanders on the ground debated whether to pull the trigger on a rescue several times in recent years, according to one of the sources, a former high-level intelligence official in Afghanistan, who said the conclusion each time was that the prospect of losing highly trained troops was too high a price to pay for rescuing a soldier who walked away from his unit before being captured by the enemy. A second source told The Washington Times that the rescue operation plans were high risk and became even less attractive in recent months when officials in the Pentagons Joint Special Operations Command grew convinced that the Taliban and the militant Haqqani network, whose operatives were holding Sgt. Bergdahl, were eager to cut a deal for his release. Joint Special Operations Command always had the rescue mission on the table and it was entirely under their ownership, but the big question centered on whether Bergdahl was somebody you risk lives for when you still have time and space to maneuver diplomatically, said the source, a high-level congressional aide, who, like the former intelligence official, spoke only on the condition of anonymity.

YOU can see the TREASON from any front porch
although the EXEMPT US Congress cannot.
Wikileak dossiers on the terrorists
Bttt
If the guy was a deserter, they should have sent a drone.
“a former high-level intelligence official in Afghanistan,”
I would bet the farm that this person is the now outed Station Chief and was outed so they could get him off the “team”. He would not sign off on the “plan” so they fired him by simply making a “mistake” in giving his name and position to over 6000 journalists.
As for the gutless Congressional aide “who spoke on condition of animimity”. Geez, some brave one you are and this administration is counting on your brave soul. Never mind the spirit of “our lives, our fortunes and our scared honor” that our founders signed onto when petitioning King George III.
anonymity whoops!
One of the few, and political ways that the administration can salvage this is if they had drugged and bugged the five they released during their time in Gitmo. This whole thing is going to be buried under a pile of “Squirrel!” moments over the next couple of weeks. This whole thing may resurface sometime in the late summer/early fall time frame when one of the following happens.
1: Berghdal is reinstated or discharged, honorably, and proceeds to go on a mass shooting/attack on a military installation or public place. Firearms/Gun Control will once again take center stage.
2: There is an attack here or abroad coordinated by any of the five released from Gitmo. Possibly coming from the boarder.
3: There will be five miracle drone strikes of these five right before the elections so the admin can bolster the image of the drone program, score political points with the voters and claim they’ve done massive damage to the Taliban prior to a final pullout of Afghanistan, and finally enhance the rep of Kill List Barry.
I choose #3
I don’ believe he was being held captive. He was living the way these nuts always live. It beats working at Starbucks in Hailey!
What does “squirrel” mean? I’m hearing that a lot these days and I don’t understand it. Can you explain. Thanks!
It’s a reference to distractions - when a dog sees a squirrel, they suddenly forget everything and focus intently.
If he trained the taliban then he’s a traitor, punishable by....
So why did we risk present and future lives to “save” him?????
Another totally WRONG Obama decision. sheesh
Thanks!
It was in the Disney movie “Up”. Here is just one of the scenes in the movie with this reference. :^)

“One of the few, and political ways that the administration can salvage this is...”:
There is one other way (which I admit is unlikely) is to charge him under Article 85 of the UCMJ with desertion.
“(a) Any member of the armed forces who
(1) without authority goes or remains absent from his unit, organization, or place of duty with intent to remain away therefrom permanently;
(2) quits his unit, organization, or place of duty with intent to avoid hazardous duty or to shirk important service; or...”
Mortman has explained it well, but I'll add: I believe the origin is the movie: "Up!".
Here's an example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OxYYPziLdR4
So cute, thank you! Funny thing is, I’m sure I’ve seen Up - I just didn’t connect the squirrel reference. Reminds me of my crazy black lab I had years ago.
