SeaTac workers “not happy” with $15 min. wage

Last January, SeaTac implemented a $15 per hour minimum wage for hospitality and transportation workers. The consequences to the drastic hike in wages are just beginning to be realized—and it’s not pretty.

A writer for NW Asian Weekly recently blogged about her experience attending an event at a SeaTac hotel. She asked employees if they were “happy with the $15 wage.” The ensuingconversations,

“It sounds good, but it’s not good,” the woman said.

“Why?” I asked.

“I lost my 401k, health insurance, paid holiday, and vacation,” she responded. “No more free food,” she added.

“The hotel used to feed her. Now, she has to bring her own food. Also, no overtime, she said. She used to work extra hours and received overtime pay.

“What else? I asked.

“I have to pay for parking,” she said.

“I then asked the part-time waitress, who was part of the catering staff.

“Yes, I’ve got $15 an hour, but all my tips are now much less,” she said. Before the new wage law was implemented, her hourly wage was $7. But her tips added to more than $15 an hour. Yes, she used to receive free food and parking. Now, she has to bring her own food and pay for parking.”

Maybe Kshama Sawant can pay the difference out of her own pocket. After all, she “cares” about the worker.

The Seahawks will still sell tickets because the people that can afford NFL tickets are far removed from this fight. What will crush people is the businesses downtown going out of business. Seattle has a fairly vibrant restaurant and retail sector downtown. I can see the retail going away first. And a lot of the restaurant business following close behind.

One of the lessons in life: Avoid negative people or you get dragged down to their level.

There is a fundamental tenet of economics that few people, even the well educated, understand. It is that trade happens because of preferences. That’s it.

Most people take on the Marxist view of class warfare or the view that trade happens only in surplus, which in this case is the wage. Note that, given their preference the above named workers would forgo the increase in nominal pay. If you want to change America and the way we approach work, wealth, property and happiness, then teach people that all trade occurs solely due to personal preference.

Personal preference - nothing more and nothing less.

That’s because they’re brainwashed and no longer know why economic liberty is liberty.

A guy I knew in a situation similar to yours used to only lend $5, no matter what they asked for. He’d say, “Let’s just start at $5. When you pay that back we can work up from there.”

They rarely paid him back, but he would use that to block any further loans. Can you imagine $5 that a person wouldn’t pay back?

It still burns me up that they would always direct the waitresses to put the bill in front of my husband.

Making the choice to permanently part from them hurt for several years, but I am much happier without their anger, hatred and dramas.

Oh, and I heard - with my own 2 ears - my sister saying in an almost tearful voice that Jimmy Carter was the best president we have ever had.

THAT is what I have had to deal with and get along with- in other words, keep my mouth shut while they mocked Christians and called Conservatives racists.

At first, we loaned them money but, then they refused to pay us back, saying that since we had the money, we should just give it to them.

You're better off without them around. We've helped family members. When my wife and I give a loan, we give it with the understanding between us that we don't care if it gets paid back. It's a test of a person's nature. We gave a loan to a niece to help her buy a car, she avoided us like the plague after that. Me and my wife know we would never see the money paid back. We tested her, and we're better off not having her around. No more help for her.

Other family members paid money back, with thanks, and we're happy to have them around us and will always help them with gifts, no strings attached. There's good people out there.
