The late Michael Hastings wrote the definitive magazine profile of Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl for Rolling Stone in June 2012. Now that America's Last Prisoner of War has been released, in a prisoner exchange for five high-ranking Taliban officials, Hastings' piece continues to offer crucial context about why Bergdahl volunteered for service in the first place, about how this intense, moral young man became so horrified by America's "good war" that he walked away from his unit's remote outpost in eastern Afghanistan in 2009, and about the abortive negotiations that could have secured Bergdahls release years ago.
Here 13 things you need to know about the American POW who is coming finally home, in the words of Hastings' 2012 feature.

Rolling Stones obligatory “but he was such a good boy” story.
Reminds me of a certified “Sunday Weeper Piece” from a big city newspaper.
The usual hilarious quotes from the nutjob father. He taught his son to read St. Aquinas in between episodes of Man Vs. Mountain.
Dad reminds me of General Garcia in the classic comedy “The In-Laws” - “I am a pacifist by nature with a deep Quaker belief in the sanctity of human life. I wish I had a choice but to kill you!”
(1) He never saw an Afghan child run over by a US truck. That was a lie.
(2) He was not "captured" - he sought out the Taliban.
(3) No immediate swap was possible.
What is true is that he and his father are sneaky fifth columnist traitors.
What is likely true is, just as the FFL realized that he did not have the psychological stuff to be a soldier, the Taliban refused to accept him as a volunteer for similar reasons, and preferred to use him as a bargaining chip.
My God, these liberals will do anything to salve their guilty consciences.
Bergdahl deserted his unit in a combat zone. He left his fellow American Soldiers open to defeat and slaughter.
...and Michael Hastings was killed in a bizarre car accident. hmmmm....
Also, I want to go on record as saying that Bergdahl knows way too much. It’s extremely dangerous to this administration that he remain alive and out in public. He may not live long enough to appreciate all those yellow ribbons in Hailey OR possibly be incarcerated for life because of the mental instability caused by his lengthy imprisonment — or some such balderdash.
While his son I agree is traitorous scum I’m not yet willing to cast that same label on his father until that charge is proven. While the words of his father are troubling he is doing what any parent would do and that is show support for their child as misguided as it may be. If the father had been found to have provided aid and support to the actual terrorists in the field then maybe that charge you cast stands.
Pioneers,,,
cool.
what could bergdahl possibly know? What it’s like to live in a cave for 5 years?
Have you seen the dad claiming the white hut for Allah over at American Thinker today?
He's gone native.
Will look now and thanks for info guys
le Légion étrangère française
I think his plan was to join the army so he could desert.
The Dad can fume all he wants, but if he told him (as reported in the story) to OBEY YOUR CONSCIENCE, then he is partly to blame for his son running off his post.
I must admit this is some pretty damning stuff. The man has gone native
ChocChipCookie ,
Hmmm, wonder what Bergie knows?
All y’all ping to this post!
