Controversy over the prisoner exchange for Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl and over allegations he abandoned his Afghanistan post has brought blowback on businesses in Hailey, Bergdahls hometown.
The Hailey Chamber of Commerce has received hundreds of phone calls from people angry that the community had planned a June 28 Bowe is Back celebration for a possible deserter, Chamber Membership Director Kristy Heitzman said.
The Chamber wasnt organizing or sponsoring Bowe is Back but promoted the event on its Facebook page, she said. Organizers cancelled the event midday Wednesday.
Some of the angry callers are veterans, Heitzman said. One angry caller said he was a trucker saying he would make sure to stop in Hailey to dump off his trash, she said.
They say were kind of a disgrace, or what a shame it is to have a celebration for a traitor, Heitzman said. They say they had planned on coming to the area to go fishing or camping, but now they wont be coming to Idaho.
Heitzman said that several hotels in the area received room cancellations from travelers upset by the Bergdahl situation. She also said city hall and the Hailey Police Department also received many angry calls. The national criticism and media attention caught the town of about 8,000 residents off guard, Heitzman said.
Maybe Im naïve, but I dont think anybody anticipated this much of a blowback, she said. We thought it would be like (Olympic gold medalist and Hailey native) Kaitlyn Farrington coming back from the Olympics. We thought it was somebody coming home.

THIS SORRY DESERTER NEEDS TRIAL AND FIRING SQUAD-— IN MY OPINION. He did it twice!!!!!
Yeah, someone is coming home - maybe - so, where is he now?
Naïve doesn't begin to explain it.
I could give these folks some benefit of the doubt for not knowing... and the reaction of the incensed visitors really ought to have been “Aren’t you aware that...” before it became “I hate you” — but that ignorance also represents a lamentable modern self centered stupor.
My spouse and I stayed in Hailey last night. We go there twice a Year for a Dr. appointment...
Usually it’s hard to find a room, but not this time. There were ribbons on the trees on the main drag though. Almost made me barf.
Is it REALLY cancelled???
OG!! I had forgotten about that LYING DEMOCRAT!!
It’s like weird, they don’t know the rotten background of this stuff. At the very LEAST until it’s been investigated, a low key approach would be fitting.
Maybe somebody thought that if he got a hero’s welcome he would forgot all about that Taliban stuff and become a red blooded ‘Murican again at the sight. If it would be likely to work, it would be worth it. But I don’t think so.
Presently residing in a Federal Prison...

Aaron Broussard, the former Jefferson Parish president who pleaded guilty to political corruption charges, has been transferred to the federal prison in Tallahassee, Fla., according to the U.S. Bureau of Prisons. His new assignment showed up Saturday on the agency’s website, three days after it listed him still at the U.S. Penitentiary in Atlanta.
Broussard, 65, began his 46-month sentence in the low-security section of the federal prison at Butner, N.C., on May 6, 2013. He moved to Atlanta earlier this year.
