They were both sergeants. Neither liked war, one being a pacifist. But both served, one in Afghanistan, the other in World War I.
Yet Bowe Bergdahl and Alvin York could not possibly be more different. And that difference speaks directly to a difference in character that wound up having a decided effect on each mans comrades in arms. A difference in character that former Army Lt. Col. Ralph Peters nails exactly in a superb piece in National Review. But first Sergeant York.
Not many people mention Sergeant Alvin York these days. But they should. In fact, as the tenth anniversary of the death of former President Reagan is remembered, it is notable that the riderless horse prancing behind Reagans flag-draped casket was named Sergeant York.
Alvin Cullum York was a poor boy born literally in a log cabin in the back woods of Tennessee.

Sergeant York should not ever appear in the same line or be spoken in the same breath with that muzzie-lovin traitor.
A big part of the story is Sgt. York’s officers in training camp were fine Christian men.
I read that in WWII the US had something like 17,000 men desert, most not from the battlefield but before they ever got there. All but one were given a dishonorable discharge.
Bergdahl is more like Private Eddie Slovik...................

Only one was executed for desertion: Eddie Slovik............

True, but there might be a few folks who’ve never heard of Sgt. York — I doubt that WWI is even discussed in schools today.
Problem is This scum had many outlets open to him if he did not want to Honorably serve his country!
The Chain of Command
The Chaplin
A Senator or Congressman!
But he chose to disgrace his Nation and Fellow Service Members!
I have no respect for this person or the ones that have issued protection for his exchange! As one said he should have
had the title of defector and never have been addressed again! As the one Shark say’s “Your Dead to Me!”
sadly im sure youre right.
but you know at some point, people are going to have to be responsible and make sure that their kids know American history and how our govt is supposed to work.
we already know the public schools are indoctrinating and not educating.
The bad luck of illness has, in some respects, been a real blessing. We found out that Sgt. York's and Ronald Reagan's America is still out there. Maybe The Sleeping Giant is beginning to stir and throw off the covers.
Bergdahl shouldn’t even be compared to Sgt. York.
He never should have volunteered in the first place.
