Moves to free detainees from the US military prison in Guantánamo Bay are gathering pace as the administration works to close the notorious jail, a top US official has said.
"There are a significant number of transfers in the pipeline at various stages and I think you're going to be seeing substantial progress this year," the senior administration official said.
Of the 149 prisoners still remaining in the jail in southern Cuba since the weekend releases, 78 have been approved to be freed without charge. The group, which includes 58 Yemenis and four Afghans, are awaiting transfer out of the jail.
US administration officials are actively working to find countries which will take them, as many cannot be sent home because of fears to US security or because they face persecution at home.

Wouldn’t it be quite a bit simpler, and just as legal, not to mention way cheaper, to just EXECUTE the Gitmo prisoners?
We could give them old innertubes and let them escape from Cuba the same way Cubans have always had to do it to escape the Communist Castro brothers... but we should add some chum to the water to make it more interesting for the sharks.
Remember that song, “Russians,” by Sting? Do the Democrats love their children, too? Are they so aligned with this guy that they even go along with setting the worst of the worst free? It seems like there’s no extreme he can go to that they won’t follow. Even things no one ever imagined, it’s “Well, if Barry’s for it, okay by me!” They used to want them released to detention in the US, which was stupid enough.
Geraldo was on TV saying, “They were going to be released at some point anyway! Do you think we should keep them for life?” I’d be all for executing them, but barring that, for life in Cuba sounds okay by me.
