Poll: Lindsey Graham Has 40-Point Lead for Tuesday's Primary (but still under 50%!)

As voters prepare for June 10th elections, a Palmetto Poll finds incumbents have an edge, with Sen. Lindsey Graham far ahead of his Republican primary opponents.

The report published by Clemson University in South Carolina says that the state is likely to remain red.

Graham is facing six challengers, but at 49% he is 40 points ahead of his nearest competitor Lee Bright. The site says South Carolina law requires primary candidates to win votes from 50 percent plus one to avoid a runoff.

The poll says 46 percent of voters said they would vote to re-elect Graham regardless of who runs against him. That's up from 31 percent last year.

"GOP voters in South Carolina, like those in other parts of the country, seem content to return their incumbent office holders to power," political science professor Dave Woodard told The Newstand. "Kentucky voters recently turned away a primary challenge to Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, and Texas voters did the same for incumbent John Cornyn. That appears to be the case in South Carolina as well.”

According to the poll, incumbent Governor Nikki Haley is also likely to hold on to her office in November with 73 percent of those polled saying they would vote for her over only 6 percent for Democratic challenger Vincent Sheheen and 2 percent for independent candidate Tom Ervin.

The university polled 400 Republican voters and 400 Democrats to achieve the findings.

An early look at the 2016 presidential race puts Florida Gov. Jeb Bush in the lead with GOP voters at 22 percent. New Jersey’s Chris Christie came in second at 10 percent, but almost half of those polled said they are undecided at the moment.

Primary is Tuesday!!

Here's hoping that the conservative momentum from Texas and Mississippi continues across the South to South Carolina, forcing Graham into a runoff.

All his opponents will coalesce behind one person...against Graham on June 24th, the same day as the MS runoff, so we point our swords at both states at the same time!!

Well. The only hope here is to force the runoff. I haven’t seen any heads up polls with him.

Not looking good but I’ve seen bigger miracles.

It’s because he’s such a tough guy. Why, he just said that if President Obama does anything else, Lindsey will go right out and impeach him! Who wouldn’t vote for somebody like that?

What’s missing from the article is the ‘little’ detail that there’s more than 35% of those polled who are ‘undecided’. That’s NOT a good thing for the incumbent. Go Lee Bright! His chances go up substantively in a run-off.

Lindsey talks a good game but hopefully people will not be fooled again. Moved from PA to SC last year and I will do my part on Tuesday to send him packing.

No need to go vote….unless you aren’t happy with Lindseed’s flip flopping, spineless lack of principle.

Shocking that a state that responded to Newt Gingrich two years ago is fine with this nincompoop. The rest of the field really must not be too impressive. I figured Lindsey had an upper hand in this race, but a lead of this size is ridiculous.

As long as he is under 50% in this first round. The “many” candidates running against him then can support ONE candidate and it could get interesting. We are seeing VERY FEW ads other than Lindsey ads one right after the other (he’s such a patriot and conservative ... I didn’t realize that! /s). The the “many” candidates are holding their financial fire ... assuming he won’t get the 50% needed. If he’s less than 50%, that means more than 50% of the people voted against him. Now when that represents ONE candidate, there is a chance. I see plenty of “Fire Lindsey” signs down here near Hilton Head. Maybe ...

Incumbents, no matter how awful they may be, always have a huge advantage with crony capitalists and the beneficiaries of crony capitalism i.e. pork. Their voters are every bit as corrupted as the officeholders. Thad Cochrane and John McCain come to mind as well as Lindsey Graham.

at 49% he is 40 points ahead of his nearest competitor Lee Bright.

That 49% are the low-information Republican primary voters. These people are more dangerous than committed Marxists and mortal enemies of the USA - even if they don't realize it.

Drove through SC and he sure has a lot of signs out. Hard to see that he even has opposition.

"The university polled 400 Republican voters and 400 Democrats to achieve the findings. "

How many democrats verses how many republican voting in the REPUBLICAN primary will determine the future of Linda's dance card.

I am one S.C. voter who will not vote for Obama’s man Grahamnesty, even if he wins and goes to the general election against the Democrat/Communist. I will not live with continuing the status quo. He’ll have to win with the votes of others.

A few T.V. ads from Lee Bright and we would force Graham into a runoff. Its now 3/4 polls showing him heading to a runoff. COME ON!
