Even Major Hollywood Studios are Leaving California
FrontPage Mag ^ | 06/06/2014 | Daniel Greenfield

When Hollywood leaves Hollywood, you know things are bad.

Sony Pictures Imageworks is moving its headquarters from Culver City to Canada.

The visual-effects unit, which employs about 270 people, said it was moving a bulk of its operations to Vancouver, where it already has a satellite studio, the Los Angeles Times reported.

A small staff will remain in Los Angeles. The move will cut costs due to Canadian tax breaks, the Times said.

For the moment this is just the visual effects unit, but considering how much filming is done abroad, it’s not a good sign.

Movies are going where the tax credits are. Canada is already tied with California.

California produced 68 percent of the top 25 movies at the worldwide box office in 1997. In 2013, it was down to eight percent. Of the 26 live-action films with production budgets over $100 million, just two — “The Hangover Part III” and “Star Trek: Into Darkness” — were filmed primarily in California.

Los Angeles however won’t be getting the sequel as LA proved too expensive for Darkness’ budget.

If California loses the film industry and pushes out non-Green energy companies, it’s going to be left with the tech industry and a giant welfare state that the tech industry will flee.

I’ve enjoyed a lot of TV programs and films that came out of Canada over the past 20 or so years.

Amazing that these liberals who run Hollywood, will seek out tax breaks and other incentives from other places. Why don’t they stay put in L.A. and pay the high taxes which liberals love others to pay????

I think California should pass a law mandating that they cannot leave California.

Have these studios ever received taxpayer subsidies? Regardless, these are the same yahoos who claim they want more taxes and they hate Republicans. They should be forced, under compulsion of law, to now eat the sandwich they worked hard to create!

Well, their work is done. Now they can wreck another state.

Leftist policy makers think the tax base is carved in stone. Wrong!

When Canada offers a superior tax and business climate, you know you’ve got problems.

Even the movie “Battle: Los Angeles” was filmed in another LA....LA - the two-letter state abbreviation for Louisiana.

Sony animators are going to Vancouver, the visual development and other personnel are staying in LA.

“For qualified visual effects or animation work done in B.C., the combined provincial and federal tax credits can amount to 58.42 per cent of the wages, salaries and remuneration paid to B.C. residents.”

“I think it’s a race to the bottom,” said Mr. Lay, adding work is now moving to Montreal because of incentives there. “So it’s going to be a matter of time until even British Columbia is not going to be able to keep up the pace of paying 60 per cent of people’s salaries. And then when that decline happens, you’re going to see another … cycle of displacement. We’re against having taxpayers pay for movies for U.S. producers who are down in L.A. and are very, very rich.”

Absolutely correct. These people helped to create and maintain an
incomplete picture of California. They support Jerry Brown and pour
cash into his coffers while the big business hating Brown does all
he can to run commerce out of the state.

The movie industry was a great asset to the state at one time but not
so much anymore. As far as I am concerned Hollywood can leave
and take most remaining actors with it. Take the name, too.
In the mean time things around FR would improve somewhat if
our many FReeper friends would resist the liberal tactic of painting all
Californians with the same brush. We actually have numerically
more conservatives in California than most states. Unfortunately
we still find ourselves outnumbered.

That’s an FR thing. I’m in NYC and I get hell every other day. They have no use for conservatives who live in liberal areas. I don’t know why because it’s much harder to live in these areas - and it takes a lot of stamina to do so!

Over thousands of years, people left what they had to seek something more, oppression ect. Conservatives today can do likewise. No material goods are worth ones sanity, pride and family.

Normie - Now in AZ, who sold/left everything to leave NY. And is far better for it. It can be done.

Some of us are stuck here because of family obligations. I know I am. And why not stay and fight? I fight every day with libs here.

Well, thats your choice. As to why not stay and fight? Because sometimes even the greatest Generals have to recognize their hill can no longer be held. And considering the election results in NY going harder left by the year, it would seem that your tax dollars are only helping them. not your intent I know. But without the conservative income, Liberal NY would crash and burn.

I had my own family obligations. I moved them with me. It royally sucked for a couple years for us. But it was ultimately worth it. No one said it would be easy and it wasn’t. But if people can flee Europe with bare money for a boat ticket, the Average American can relocate even the sickest family member if he tries.

You can stop the lecture now. I’m not real good at listening to lectures from people I don’t know and who don’t know me.

The last government I heard that did what you suggest is headquartered in Caracas, Venezuela. How would you forbid them for leaving? Passing laws does not mean they’re enforceable or—wait for it—legal. You are suggesting the tactics of the pressy president, Barack Obama, himself.

I actually had a FReeper from Conn tell me I need to leave California.
No, we and others are on the front lines or behind the lines as the
case may be. If I can correct a misinformed lost lib then I feel
successful. Our FR detractors paint us all with a broad brush and spend
the rest of their time preaching to the choir.

How dare somebody from Connecticut criticize you! I remember when it was a solid Republican state. Now it's full of lib nuts. I must admit, when people start intoning "about the last 1,000 years" I get a bit snarky. It's my NY personality!
