Looking back at D-Day on Fridays 70th anniversary of the Allied invasion, many of us know the event that changed the course of WWII only through such great films as The Longest Day. But a number of Hollywood stars as well as stars in other fields were actually part of the forces that stormed the beaches of Normandy. Here are a few of the heroes:

Jimmy Doohan (Scotty from star trek) went ashore with the first wave on Juno beach without a scratch. During the following night he got shot 6 times by an overeager Canadian sentry with a BREN gun, resulting in the loss of his right middle finger.

Charles Durning was a U. S. Army Ranger at Normandy earning a Silver Star and awarded the Purple Heart.
Which is why he couldn't drive in Toronto ;)
George Martin (producer/ sound engineer for the beatles) was an naval artillery spotter/ observer in the fleet air arm. Just learned that in a documentary.

Salinger sought out Hemingway at the Hotel Ritz in Paris and showed him his writing. Hemingway actually read it and said he had talent.

Oh, man, that explains a lot about the confusion on the beach. Somebody must have asked Yogi Berra for directions and he said, “When you get to a fork in the road, take it.”

Scotty didn't have a driver's license? Yikes,Canadian laws are pretty strict.My Dad's late older brother lost an eye as a kid in a playground accident and yet he had a Massachusetts license.
Not so much losing the salute finger, as trying to offer the “But lady, we only be going one-half impulse power” excuse for speeding
