School Sunscreen Ban Causes 10-Year-Old Girl To Get FRIED On Field Trip
Daily Caller ^ | June 6, 2014 | Eric Owens

Posted on 06/07/2014 1:30:35 AM PDT by grundle

A San Antonio mother is furious because officials at her 10-year-old daughter’s elementary school banned sunscreen during a recent school field trip.

Guess what happened.

Of course, the poor kid came home crispily sunburned, reports local ABC affiliate KSAT.

To make matters worse, mad mom Christy Riggs said skin cancer runs in her family — and her father who had it passed away recently.

At issue is a district policy which prohibits kids from bringing sunscreen anywhere on school grounds. Riggs strongly disagrees with it.

North East Independent School District spokeswoman Aubrey Chancellor defended the policy because, she said, the district considers sunscreen a medication.

“Typically, sunscreen is a toxic substance,” Chancellor told the Fox affiliate, “and we can’t allow toxic things in to be in our schools.”

The district spokeswoman argued that allowing kids to handle sunscreen is a very risky thing to do.

“They could possibly have an allergic reaction [or] they could ingest it. It’s really a dangerous situation,” Chancellor said.

“We have to look at the safety of all of our students and we can’t allow children to share sunscreen,” she added.

Baz Luhrmann - Everybody’s Free (To Wear Sunscreen)

Ladies and Gentlemen of the class of ’99
If I could offer you only one tip for the future, sunscreen would be
it. The long term benefits of sunscreen have been proved by
scientists whereas the rest of my advice has no basis more reliable
than my own meandering
experience…I will dispense this advice now.

[Edited]

Be careful whose advice you buy, but, be patient with those who
supply it. Advice is a form of nostalgia, dispensing it is a way of
fishing the past from the disposal, wiping it off, painting over the
ugly parts and recycling it for more than
it’s worth.

But trust me on the sunscreen…

I doubt this kid is paler than my wife, our biological children, and I. We all have very Irish skin. That’s why you put sunscreen on them in the morning before school. ALso, you make sure they’re wearing a somewhat high necked t-shirt with sleeves. And at the very least, a baseball cap if you can’t get the kid to wear a more protective sun type hat. And if the kid were old enough to be putting on her own sunscreen, she was old enough to understand she needed to keep that hat on her head.

Did the mother put sun screen on the child before she left for school that day? A good 50 or higher applied 30 min before going in the sun will usually last most of the day. If you’re swimming you might have to reapply on some areas. If my child were having a field day I would put sunscreen on myself when they were getting dressed and send them off with a hat or cap.

That's exactly right and if they were going swimming, you'd put one of those spf shirts on them. I'm not saying it's a good rule. It's more nanny state stuff. However, I don't think the rule is asinine or grounds for a lawsuit either. The last thing a school needs is a bunch of fourth grade boys running around with aerosol sunscreen. And how well can most 4th graders actually apply sunscreen (other than the aerosol kind) themselves? My guess is most of them not too well. Wouldn't a decent/non-halfwit parent have found an alternate method of protecting her kid?

And, you know it’s true... The good of the many outweighs the good of the one. It’s critical that we teach, manage, and monitor to the least capable among us. It would be a travesty that a single child’s needs should have a focus.

Is a sarc tag really necessary? This is preposterous.

“Typically, sunscreen is a toxic substance,” Chancellor told the Fox affiliate, “and we can’t allow toxic things in to be in our schools.”"

"Once you're in a hole, keep digging ... and digging ... and digging...."

The article goes on to say that with a doctor's note the sunscreen is allowed -- and protective clothing is probably a very good idea, too. So there are a few things that mom might have done herself. But the school district clearly employs world-class (Obama-class) idiots. Typically, sunscreen is a completely inert substance, and that's why the FDA allows it to be advertised as a good thing to be put on babies.

According to the CDC's most recent statistics, 9,154 people in the United States died from melanomas of the skin, that's compared to 11,078 firearm homicides. The school district is a "gun-free" zone. And an "intelligence-free" zone, too.

The Borg had to look after the safety of the Collective, too!

Sun screen is merely one of a thousand ways, government teachers willingly agree to teach children to bow down and worship the Government Collective.

Teachers willingly sought expensive training to qualify for a position that trains children to worship the Government Collective.

Teachers, after their freely chosen and expensive training, **willingly** sought work in the Government Collective.

Teachers **willing** go to work and open the doors on a system that **HURTS** children and our nation’s future. None of this could happen without their **willing** cooperation.

Personally....I shun government teachers . I don’t have abortion workers for friends, either.

You are right in that some areas have idiotic mandates- however we have kept some federal regulations out (we gave up medicaid money to do it). We also have our own electric grid- which keeps the feds off our backs in regards to electicity. In rural areas people tend ignore idiotic regs. There is a lot of jury nullification that go’s on if it does make it to court.

How old are you? If you were getting insulin shots from kids in your class, it's unlikely they even had decent sunscreen when you were a kid. They had that savage tan crap that didn't do diddly for palefaces like us. Back in those days, all of us pasty faced folks covered up. That said, I agree with you that today any kid like you or me should and would absolutely know how to put on sunscreen by the age of 10. But a majority of kids who don't have our burning problems probably don't. Not that it matters one way or the other. I'm not arguing for the rule. I'm just saying the mother's an idiot. In the picture the kid has a burnt shoulder! That could have been prevented simply by wearing a shirt with short sleeves. These days we put our pale grandkids in those SPF shirts, but really, a t-shirt would do.

What we have here is a stupid mother who thought putting her pale kid in a skimpy top was a good idea. Now she wants to blame the nanny state for her own foolishness.

Consider that this is very liberal (blue) San Antonio TX; the place where that jerk Mayor Castro is being pushed to become part of the Obama regime to lead HUD. Idiots.

I grew up in Dallas TX and from about age 4 I was roaming the neighborhood barefoot, shirtless and in cut-off pants. We spent two weeks in Galveston every year at the beach. We never used any “Sun screen” lotions, nor did any of my friends or their families. We got great tans, but never got a severe sunburn because we knew when we were getting a little red and would head for some shade to cool down.

I’m nearing 72 and have worked years doing yardwork, etc., in just shorts as well as playing golf for decades in the hot, sunny weather. ....I truly don’t know anyone who has died from exposure to the Sun, although I read the medical scare things about skin cancer all the time (financed by the firms that make those lotions?). Sunlight provides necessary Vitamin D.

The original sun block ladies used were Parasols!

Because the reality is that before sunscreen the palefaces like me protected ourselves with clothing. We wore hats and our shoulders were always covered. This kid got a burn in her shoulders. No, the mother's at fault for making her kid the victim. If she had wanted to complain about the stupid sunscreen rule, I'd be all for that. Even if she wanted to ignore the rule and send sunscreen along with her kid, I'd absolutely support her resistance. But not properly preparing her kid for a day without sunscreen was a lapse in good parenting. Look, it happens. Maybe she just forgot. But to start complaining about the stupid rule after she didn't do her job is a little too late. I suspect when and if she tries to sue, she'll be run out of the court. And the way things are today, she'll be lucky if the school doesn't sic CPS on her for child endangerment. Bottom line is, she knew the stupid rule - she should have dressed her kid better. And when precious came home with a sunburn, she should have used it as a teaching moment. "This is why you can't wear tank tops like the other girls, Honey. God gave you skin that without sunscreen needs to wear a t shirt."
