Long before Gakirah Barnes was murdered in a hail of bullets on the South Side, her mother had heard the unsettling, persistent rumors about her.
Her 17-year-old daughter — the same 5-foot-3, 128 pound girl once seen as shy at school — was known for something almost unheard of on the streets of Chicago.
There are teenage girls who are accomplices in gang murders.
There are girls who hide gang guns for their boyfriends.
But Barnes was believed to be a “hitta” — a female assassin for a faction of the Gangster Disciples, law enforcement sources say.

I was living in Galesburg, IL, which isn’t exactly Southside, and every now and then on the public access cable channel I would catch the broadcast of the town council meetings. I mostly tuned in to see the batshit crazy stuff the lone black Alderman had to say. The guy represented the “rough” part of town (can’t say the “wrong side of the tracks” as the town had tracks radiating out from it like spokes on a wheel). It truly was a monthly comedy routine.
Well in the paper there was a report of gunfire in that part of town and a house had taken a bullet, and it turned out that the house that was shot at was this Alderman’s (reminder: The guy is black).
Right there in front of God and everyone this Alderman exclaimed in the Town Council session, “NIGGER SHOT MAH HOUSE!”
There were all these gasps and righteous indignation from the rest of the lilly white Council, and he was reprimanded for his language, but still... the fact remained that some... person... shot a gun at this guy’s house and he was pissed.

Also referred to as gun control in Chicago.
Black crime is rooted in racism and poverty. Special treatment and money are the best methods to combat this crime. /s

Gang members also have their girlfriends (the ones with no criminal records) buy guns for them. This points out the futility of the whole "background check" process. If a guy's too dangerous to be allowed to buy a gun, then he shouldn't be loose on the street in the first place.

A guy I know had to do just this... Right out of the military, he got into a fight and wound up with a felonious assault on his record. That was more than 30 years ago. His wife owns a couple of shotguns for home protection.
