On Saturday, after California Chrome lost his chance to become horse racing's first Triple Crown winner since Affirmed in 1978, co-owner Steve Coburn went off during a post-race interview, saying it's a "coward's way out" for owners to only run their horses in one of the three Triple Crown races.

And the Sore Loser Award goes to.....

It was a race, and California Chrome lost. I didn't hear Coburn complaining before the race. Unbecoming.

If a horse is truly deserving of the Triple Crown he will defeat all comers. Otherwise, they are not truly deserving of it.

Coward’s way out....Actually financially it’s very smart.

It costs a ton of money to enter a horse in a race, and if not running in the other two gives your horse a better shot at winning one, then it makes perfect sense.

I’m sure Coburn didn’t just fall off of the turnip truck. Apparently the rules allow a competitor to race without requiring the horse to run in all of the Triple Crown events. His behavior is embarrassing.

There is no rule that a horse has to be run in all 3 events, entry into all 3 are totally separate things too.

This guy sounds like the biggest whiner since the Miami Heat fans the other day.

Secretariat was a unique racehorse champion. Inspiring story.

Sounds like the guy was expecting a coronation and not a race.

When I first read,”Coward’s Way Out”, I imagined the jockey and horse jumping the inside rail and cutting across the field. I then discovered that California Chrome just lost the race.

Agree. A Triple Crown winner should be a complete horse and excel at all distances. That is what makes them special. Chrome was good, just not special.

I wanted California C to win...it had all the makings of a Seabiscuit story....but I’m sorry to hear the owner didn’t keep his mouth shut.

Even so, in a way he has a point. A ball team has to play the season, not just the last games. But the rules allow for what they did, fair or not.

There is no “season”, this is not ball.

They are 3 distinct and separate events.

You can’t compare a ball game to a horse race. A horse race is a race. A ball game is a sport in which teams are playing at bats and on the field through 9 or more innings. You have 9 players on the field. The object of the game is to out-pitch, out-bat, outperform and outscore the opposing team. In horse racing, you have a jockey and a racehorse. Whoever crosses the finish line first in each race wins.

Apples and oranges, my friend.

Well yes, but the Triple Crown is the culmination of 3 events. So CC was running against horses that could never win it because they weren’t in the other 2 races.

But anyway, he’d have been better off saying nothing.
