This gal knew I was crossing, but she didn’t care. Some gentleman coming out of the store saw it and he told me this stuff appears to have become a habit with some of them.

***“I dare you” mentality ***

I had a man from Little Rock tell me that has happened to him quite often. Kids will cross in the middle of the street, stop in front of you and DARE you to try and go around.

intentionally take forever to cross the street as his way to stick it to the man?

So I'm not imagining this! I figured it was part of reparations.

I almost got hit by two Navajos years go in Farmington NM. I was in the crosswalk and they missed me by about 6 inches. No “Pellicano” in a crosswalk was going to make them stop!

“...what was the behavior of the people waiting to cross the street? Did they step boldly out and begin to walk? “

Exactly. Unless each of the test jaywalkers acted exactly alike as they jaywalked, this “study” is meaningless. It would have been very easy to direct the behavior of the jaywalking participants to get whatever result you want. If nothing else, tell the black walkers to give up immediately after the first hesitation, but tell the white walkers to push the issue of crossing, after the first hesitation.

We already knew that the races had different rates of pedestrian deaths, and anyone who has spent much time in black neighborhoods shouldn’t be surprised.

Blacks are unlike anything that most whites have seen in regards to the behavior they display on city streets while on foot, traffic rules, traffic, situational awareness, adhering to some kind of order and haste in crossing streets, Blacks largely seem unaware of such things, their indifference and carelessness, and rudeness and habit of deliberately moving slow and languidly in front of cars as though asserting in your face arrogance is amazing, and national.

No sorry. I stopped at a very clearly marked crosswalk outside DC with my granddaughter in the stroller. Two lanes stopped but five cars in a row blew through the left lane. If I had stepped out thinking those cars would stop, we would have been hit.

It isn’t race or gender or socioeconomic class. It is cells phones and distracted drivers who are not paying attention causing accidents.

Sorry but I gotta call bullshit on this. Far too little detail given. Where were these men at in the cross walk when cars stopped and when cars did not stop? And to what percentages? As a former LEO who stood in a street to direct traffic I can assure that even being “blue” and wearing a pistol dos not insure the drivers will stop. Too many drivers are in a world of their own when behind the wheel.

“I would say the same study should be made on sending conservative whites across the street see how many stop then...”

Or, perhaps, blacks dressed in business suits. But yea, in Hoodies, I will try to avoid them, but I also will try, VERY HARD, to not stop.

Could it be that the person who is black is harder to spot against the black asphalt? Solution: paint all streets white......

The Inequitable Toll of Pedestrian Deaths
by Angie Schmitt

A recent report by the Centers for Disease Control found that while 10.5 percent of all trips in the United States are made on foot, pedestrians made up 13 percent of all traffic fatalities between 2001 and 2010. During those years, a staggering 47,392 pedestrians were killed on American roadways. In 2010, the per capita pedestrian fatality rate in America was more than double the rate in the UK and Germany — 13.9 deaths per million people compared to 6.7 and 5.8, respectively, according to figures compiled by the British government [XLS].

Minority groups and the elderly suffer disproportionately from dangerous conditions for walking. Image: NYTimes
The CDC report also highlights the social dimensions of this public health epidemic. Not everyone is affected equally by dangerous walking conditions in America. Elderly and minority populations are at the greatest risk, researchers found, while men of all demographics were two-and-a-half times more likely than women to be killed by a car while walking.

Men over age 85 and women between the ages of 75 and 84 suffer a disproportionate share of pedestrian deaths. These high-risk age cohorts were each more than three times as likely to be killed while walking than people between 15 and 24 years of age. As a result, CDC officials predict overall pedestrian fatality rates may increase in the coming years as the American population ages.

Pedestrian fatalities also took a high toll on Native American, Hispanic, and black populations. Native American men were four times more likely than white men to be killed while walking, and the fatality rates for black and Hispanic men are about twice that of white men. The disparity was less pronounced for women, but even so, Native American women are roughly twice as likely as white women to be the victim of a fatal pedestrian crash, while Hispanic and black women are 50 percent more likely.

The discrepancy may be partly explained by the fact that more people of color tend to live in urban areas, where residents walk more and are more exposed to traffic violence as pedestrians. (The lower level of driving in cities means that urban residents are less exposed to traffic violence overall.) Another factor is that black and Hispanic families are much less likely to own a car than white families, so these populations also walk more than the public overall.

From a policy perspective, one implication is that any initiative that increases risk to pedestrians — increasing speed limits, for example — is likely to have inequitable consequences across society.

http://usa.streetsblog.org/2013/05/07/the-inequitable-toll-of-pedestrian-deaths/

Obama needs to provide every American with a car. Pedestrians are at high risk.

Drivers and pedestrians who are alcohol-impaired
Alcohol-impairment—either for the driver or for the pedestrian—was reported in 47% of the traffic crashes that resulted in pedestrian death. Of the pedestrians involved, 33% had a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of greater than or equal to .08 grams per deciliter (g/dL).1
Additionally, higher vehicle speeds increase both the likelihood of a pedestrian being struck by a car and the severity of injury.3 Most pedestrian deaths occur in urban areas, non-intersection locations, and at night.1

I can speak from stories I am very familiar with.

My nephew, who is now 40 but was in his 20s when the accidents occurred, hit and killed two pedestrians in separate incidents. It was late at night and both pedestrians had been drinking and were wearing dark clothing. The cops in both cases found the pedestrians at fault. He lived near the beach with a lot of bars so there were drunks walking around at all hours.

My son, who is 27, was hit by a car on a major road at about 11 PM as he crossed against the light. My son was drunk - the driver was not doing anything wrong. By the grace of God, my son was spared serious injury. He was taken by ambulance to the hospital and was released several hours later. The woman who hit him was doing about 45 - not speeding.

I feel terrible for people who hit pedestrians when it isn’t their fault.

How about an experiment on how many pizza delivery companies have a difficult time getting drivers to deliver pizza in black communities after dark?

Maybe everyone should take a deep breath and get real...

In a similar vein, people will honk at a driver in an old car who sits at a light after it turns green SOONER than honking at a person in an expensive car.

Here's the flash - people treat higher status people better than lower status people. Which is one of the reason people strive to become ‘higher status’. In the animal kingdom it's called pecking order... And no, it's not ‘right’ and on a spiritual level... we all agree on that - while maintaining the pecking order....
