After the dust failed to entirely settle following the Mississippi GOP primary, sending us to a runoff between Senator Thad Cochran and state senator Chris McDaniel, Ed had the following to say about Cochrans prospects.
[Cochran's] inability to best McDaniel last night may have some Mississippi voters who supported the incumbent last night wonder whether its better to make a change now that is obviously inevitable, while those few who voted for someone other than the top two finishers are already looking for a Cochran alternative. The runoff will probably still be relatively close, but dont be surprised to see McDaniel win by more than 51/49, either.
Team Cochran might have been reading Eds comments and taken notice. But rather than throwing their hands up in despair, reports indicate that they may have decided to attempt a rather unusual comeback strategy for a primary.
Senator Thad Cochrans supporters opened Mississippis Republican Senate runoff on Wednesday by signaling that they would treat the race like a general election and seek the votes of Democrats and independents during the three-week campaign against State Senator Chris McDaniel.
The only reason this is a possibility is found in the rather free wheeling rules of Mississippi election law. Nobody registers by party, so anyone can vote in the election. The Democrats already have their nominee without the need for a runoff and theyre highly unlikely to win the general election so theres nothing stopping them from voting in the GOP tiebreaker this month. Still, Matt Lewis seems somewhat skeptical.

I am praying that similar democrat hubris will keep them from voting for Lindsey Graham here in our primary tomorrow.
They will vote for Thad. I now have two democrat friends promoting Thad on Facebook. And I have a friend who is a a Republican who is as well. She is sentimental to Thad and the way things were 20 years ago. She is friendly with the daughter.
And speaking of the closet, expect all of the LGBTQABCs to go for Thad.
As someone said some where why would they want to put Thad in knowing he would supposedly be the hardest to beat in Nov. Of course no one ever said Ms dims were very bright..... no pun intended
Thad brings in money for them. He is a liberal at heart. Someone should ask him if he supports homosexuals marrying in other states.
I do because they can easily beat a senile old guy who won't debate but McDaniel wouldn't be such a cake walk.
A question about a senario I’ve seen floated around. The senario is to get Cochran
elected for another term and a few months into the term he’ll resign and the
Gov. will appt a replacement.
Is this just gossip or is there some truth to the speculation?
I have heard that from more than one source. It makes sense just by watching Thad or more by NOT being able to watch Thad. Haley and his whole family live here in Yazoo City and that has been the talk all year long. Thad wanted to retire and Haley talked him out of it.
Thanks.
That’s the same Last Ditch strategy DoWorst tried in the runoff against Ted Cruz. Didn’t work out so well for DoWorst.
If Cochran uses Democrats to win the primary, then McDaniel should run as a third party candidate, if MS law allows it. The tricks of the establishment should not be accepted sitting down.
Wrong again. The prohibition is “if they voted in the Dem Primary, they can not vote in the GOP runoff” Voting in the GOP Primary does not prevent voting in the runoff.
“The conventional wisdom is that the Democrats have a much better chance in the General Election against McDaniel than they do up against the incumbent, Cochran. The Democrat Party in Mississippi has said as much. Then, why on Earth would Democrats rush to the runoff election to help the guy that they consider to be the most formidable opponent.”
With Cochran, any Dims voting in the Republican runoff get a two-fer:
1. Cochran will be easier to beat. His handlers will have to hide him the best they can to keep him from saying idiotic things, like Bill Clinton is still president, or to keep him from drooling out of the side of his mouth in public. And while the press hasn’t hammered Cochran as much as it should for refusing to debate McDaniel, they’ll be sure to hammer him for not debating the Dim.
2. If Cochran wins the general election, the Dims will have a candidate that votes much more closely with them than McDaniel ever would.
You’re right about Democrats being different back in the 70’s. They were ideologically more aligned with Scoop Jackson and Zell Miller. These were the “Reagan Democrats”. Today’s crop are out-and-out pure Socialists.
TC is going to lose.
Shhhh!
Cochran is the incumbent, RINO that he is. McDaniel is the TEA Party favorite. There is no reason why he, and Cochran, should not ask for Independent votes. The problem is when an R asks for D votes.
Mississippi whites vote 88-90% GOP these days....highest in the country... Bama is very close second
After that third place is farther back
Whites are 62?% of the population and have 15-25% higher turnout rates than blacks who are 37% of general population
Why know nothings think my home state is in play is either serious stupidity is willfull agitprop or both
I heard Paul Gigot and his neo Yankee GOPe pundits on that FOX show yesterday saying this garbage
Its hilarious
The dumbassed woman said Mississippi would be in play if Thad loses because GOP only won by 12 points in 2012 election
Really....only 12 points in our blackest state
How do such stupid people get paid so much and have so much influence....I wish I had that key to wealth and power
So much of GOP punditry are dilletante and Kardashian like
Folks need to study Mississippi electorate and recent history to know that notion is fear tactic agit prop
Folks here hands ringing over this runoff should read up on how often old incumbent who enters a runoff from behind three weeks after primary actually wins runoff?
Answer...around one in twenty is an educated guess
I can’t vote in Mississippi anymore so y’all don’t go to sleep but odds against old Thad are high
And the white Left around Fondren or the Coast....I just don’t see them voting for Thad as lesser of two evils
And if they believed this nonsense that McDaniel is easier to beat in the general then wouldn’t they vote for him instead of the son of Byram or Terry or something like that....old Thad probably had his first make out session on the old swinging bridge....hell I’ve even done that...lol
