Insurgents seize Iraqi city of Mosul as troops flee

BEIRUT — Insurgents seized control early Tuesday of most of the northern Iraqi city of Mosul, including the provincial government headquarters, offering a powerful demonstration of the mounting threat posed by extremists to Iraq’s teetering stability.

Fighters with the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS), an al-Qaeda offshoot, overran the entire western bank of the city overnight after Iraqi soldiers and police apparently fled their posts, in some instances discarding their uniforms as they sought to escape the advance of the militants.

In Baghdad, Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki announced a “general mobilization” and asked parliament to declare a state of emergency, saying the government would not allow the area to fall “under the shadows of terror and terrorists.”

Iraq’s speaker of parliament, Osama Nujaifi, said Mosul, Iraq’s third-largest city and the effective capital of northern Iraq, is now entirely in insurgent hands.

“When the battle got tough in the city of Mosul, the troops dropped their weapons and abandoned their posts, making it an easy prey for the terrorists,” he told a televised news conference in Baghdad.

All key facilities are now controlled by the insurgents, including the airport and the prisons, said Nujaifi, who is from Mosul.

Iran now getting involved, great....

Iran Govt points out that the shia holy shrines in Iraq (Kerbala, Najaf, Samara Khazemain) are “red lines” for Iran.

The Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS)

Does this mean that the terrorists that the US is arming in Syria are working with the terrorists in Iraq who want to topple the gov that replaced the one we toppled?

This “offensive” is being financed by the Saudis. They are attempting to establish an Arabic speaking Sunni confederation that would include large parts of Syria and Iraq to oppose Iran. Post bin Laden al Queda is a Saudi financed international Sunni fighting force. The capture of Mosul is the high point of this campaign. Soon Iran will be forced to intervene to protect Shi’ite interests in Iraq.

Sorry if you think it was a waste, but I spent 2 years there as a contractor, and what I can say is that the US Military was killing those a$$holes by the thousands. Now that we pulled out, they are getting to run another country and have a base of operations. Gee, when they had Afghanistan it really didn’t work out for us so well.

70 years later we still have troops in both Germany and Japan. 60 years later we still have troops in Korea. All have strategic interest to the US. If we take a look a map, Iraq is to the west and Afghanistan is to the east of one of our next wars. But obozo is going to pull us out of both and give Iran the advantage. The PKK has been a thorn in the Iraqi’s side as well as Turkey and want their own autonomous region. But IIRC, their idealogy based on marxism. I could be wrong though.

I agree with your sentiments, but all the Obama White Hut had to do when coming into office was negotiate a Status of Forces Agreement with the Iraqi government. They didn’t take it seriously because it wasn’t “the right war” and now Iraq has been overrun by Al Queda.

A total cluster.
