Sunni Militants Drive Iraqi Army Out of Mosul
NYT ^ | 6/10/2014 | SUADAD AL-SALHY and TIM ARANGO

Sunni militants spilling over the border from Syria seized control Tuesday of the northern city of Mosul, Iraq’s second largest, in the most stunning success yet in a rapidly widening insurgency that threatens to drag the country and the region into war.

Having consolidated control over Sunni-dominated Nineveh Province, armed gunmen were heading on the main road to Baghdad, Iraqi officials said, and had already taken over parts of Salahuddin Province. Thousands of civilians were fleeing south toward Baghdad and east toward the autonomous region of Kurdistan, where security is maintained by a fiercely loyal army, the peshmerga.

The Iraqi army apparently crumbled in the face of the militant assault, as soldiers dropped their weapons, shed their uniforms for civilian clothes and blended in with the fleeing masses. The militants freed thousands of prisoners and took over military bases, police stations, banks and provincial headquarters, before raising the black flag of the jihadi group Islamic State of Iraq and Syria over public buildings. The bodies of soldiers, police officers and civilians lay scattered in the streets.

[...]

In Washington, the State Department spokeswoman, Jen Psaki, said in a statement that the United States was “deeply concerned about the events that have transpired in Mosul,” and that the Obama administration supported a “strong, coordinated response to push back this aggression.”

Yeah, “deeply concerned”. Are they always caught flat footed? Is anybody minding the store?

Perhaps it is best we let Iraq disintegrate into a half dozen little fiefdoms along religious/tribal lines.

My WAG is that the Saudi and Qatar crooks are behind this and since they are fairly influential in DC there will be just the usual blather out of our “elite.” So technically Al Quaida is a country now.

My money’s on Turkey.

THIS is the Blood-For-Oil conflict the freaks accused GWB of. Yet the jackasses are long gone when the actual conflict is joined. Just like Vietnam.

It doesn't sound like there's much of an Iraqi army left. So, Barry is going to have a choice: reintroduce US forces to retake Mosul, or let Iraq disintegrate into a regional war. Any bets on which way he goes?

This may be the damn breaking. The Bergdahl trade was real bad. This is way worse, but they just don't know it yet.

The thugs were driving around in Humvees? Oh, the ones “stolen” from Obama in Libya. They probably have that night vision equipment that was also “stolen” from Obama in Libya.
Quick! Somebody check to see if Obama has had any submarines “stolen” in Libya!

Strongly worded letter to follow -- probably blaming the "Israeli occupation of Palestine" somehow.

This purports to indicate the Iraqi Army is back in charge of Mosul. But I don’t know. I can watch the video but don’t understand what is going on.

All that matters?

Iraq is pumping 3.3 million bpd, and that’s about to crash if these guys start battling in Baghdad.

ISIS does NOT want to mess with the Kurds..those guys are tough and will defend the North to the last man. ISIS fatal move would be to head towards any city in “Kurdistan”.

Mosul should have been turned over the Kurds. Bush was too wimpy to do what had to be done.

Obama has certified that Iraq was ready to self-govern. I wasn’t a fan of Bush’s nation building, but Obama blew the ‘status of forces’ agreement intentionally. He’s undoing everything America did in the past century.

We need to stick it to Hillary. She let this go on unchecked. It happened on her watch. Mosul is the 2nd largest city and it got captured by Sunnis in a majority Shia country. Iraq will be burning soon.

Spot on. He blew the occupation there and in Afghanistan. He should have allowed to countries to fracture on ethnic/religious lines, set up a status of forces agreement in each new country and we’d have peace there today.

We’ve had a lot of crummy Presidents lately.
