Iraq Asked U.S. for Strikes, Officials Say
New York Times ^ | June 11, 2014 | By MICHAEL R. GORDON and ERIC SCHMITT

As the threat from Sunni militants in western Iraq escalated last month, Prime Minister Nuri Kamal al-Maliki secretly asked the Obama administration to consider carrying out airstrikes against extremist staging areas, according to Iraqi and American officials.

But Iraq’s appeals for military assistance have so far been rebuffed by the White House, which has been reluctant to open a new chapter in a conflict that President Obama has insisted was closed when the United States withdrew the last of its forces from Iraq in 2011.

A spokeswoman for the National Security Council, Bernadette Meehan, declined to comment on Mr. Maliki’s requests and the administration’s response, saying in a statement, “We are not going to get into details of our diplomatic discussions, but the government of Iraq has made clear that they welcome our support” in combating the Islamic extremists.

“We had troops in Japan and Europe for many decades after WW2. Iraq is a hugely important strategic ally in that region and we are giving it away after all that long fought work to get it stable again. This is disgusting.”

Thanks for touching on this history often ignored by conservatives and used by rats for decades to harm us overseas.

We have kept a military presence for over a century in Gitmo and the Philippines and since WWII in Germany/Europe/Japan and afterwards in Korea. Often it takes decades for the hatred of killers and their families to die off.

We didn’t in Nam and now in Iraq and soon Afghanistan.

I know you are right.

We have, once again, set up another part of the Caliphate.

Pray for the Christians in the Middle East.

"There will be a "Fall of Baghdad" within a week, much like the Fall of Saigon in 1975."

Maybe a month at the most, and all 4000 something of our men and women will have died in vain, not to mention many more thousands that are maimed for life. The idea we could install a democracy in peoples who put a false god above freedom was huge mistake.

Must admit I originally supported disposing of Saddam and was encouraged by the free elections. As the war took its toll on our youth, I changed my mind. I was wrong. We should have left Saddam alone and bombed any place we knew he had WMD's.

That part of the world will never change, especially Aftganiscrap. I would have no problem with nuking them into oblivion, collateral damage be damned. Japan learned; Germany learned with Dresdan and such, but these savages will never learn. Someone mentioned that maybe it's a genetic trait.

Let them self-destruct between their Sunni and Shite wars. We should be concentrating on North Korea and Iran. I have little fear of China (for now) since they own so much of our debt and US properties and rely on us to buy their products.

A few predator strikes won't help. Again, I say the West should just nuke the bastards and let them know who is in charge. However, with our wussy muslim CIC, it won't happen until a nuke goes off in America. He will have no choice but to respond. And yes, nuclear bombs have a signature that determines where they were developed. I'm actually sick to my stomach about our losses and playing games with these savages. Kill them all!

Keep on "fracking" and send Saudi Arabia back to riding camels.

“We went to war to contain, not to defeat the enemy.”

..... and to give them back reinforcements..... at a rate of 5:1.

Apples and oranges Sir. Germany, Italy, and Japan, were about imperialism and power and building empires, although they had their sick political systems (facism), also. Korea and Viet Nam was all about ideology (communism). Iraq and Aftganiscrap are about theology.

Ideology can be changed; evidently theology cannot be changed. The middle east has been warring for their Allah since Mohammed first appeared on the scene.

Muslims will never ever be satisfied until a world-wide Caliphe, and then they will still war amongst themselves. The have been and always will be barbarians because of their superiority complex, which they do have in common with the facists and communists.

BTW, it will take more than decades for this paradise worshipping cult to stop teaching their children to stop hating Israel, American, and the West in general. There is no changing them like we did with the Axis. They just don't respect their own women and children enough to join civilization. It's all about Allah and Mohammed and their 72 virgins.

Someone once said to paraphrase, "when Islam starts to respect life rather than revere death, things may change" If we don't make a point now, we will get nuked. Hope were both gone before that happens. I worry about my children and grand-children every day. Blow them back into their 6th century longings.

You are correct about the savages in the middle east.

When we leave them to their own ways, they quickly revert to their total savage ways to destroy other humans, who don’t agree with them.

actually what he wants is what the majority of Muslims want, a Caliphate..he is probably grinning from ear to ear right now

Okay, say they get their caliphate. When muslims live under the regime, and experience a life of misery, then who can they blame?

There will be a "Fall of Baghdad" within a week, much like the Fall of Saigon in 1975.

I suspect--sadly--that this is exactly correct.

Obama gave it back to the terrorist by allowing a “void” with leaving so he could tout “I got us out of Iraq.” I am so numb and angry all together that I can even wrap my head around this.Every General said back then if we completelleft when obama pulled out, THIS would happen.

You and I may be devestated, but I will tell you who isn’t...all the 47% that voted for Obama..Obama doesn’t care and neither do they. i’m just so depressed at feeling so helpless with this evil man in charge.

I would say the dims would rather destroy the nation. They want America remade I to a marxist state. It’s what they are. Being wrong might be part of the consideration but not a large part.

The 70th Anniversary of D-Day drives home the point: When we invaded France (and Italy), the goal was not to contain the Nazis, but to beat them back across the Rhine and destroy them. While we were concerned about collateral damage in Normandy, that was secondary to the military objectives for something that Liberals should understand — the “greater good.”
