In January, Ashley Nicole Chiasson spent 28 days in jail after being extradited to Clay County from her home state of Louisiana. She was released after officials realized they had the wrong person.

What I don’t understand is how the wrong person can be extradited? I would be pretty unhappy with my home state if they extradited me under such circumstances.

In an extradition hearing, wouldn’t a judge be interested to know that the local person had never been to the jurisdiction asking for her?

I'm guessing that is what 90% of criminals being extradited contend.

It sounds to me like she got really, really, crappy service from the public defender.

They went to Louisiana and got her once...so it isn’t where she lives that is the problem. Incompetence is the issue.

Do these idiots not check Social Security numbers? Unless the fugitive is an illegal with no identification, there are methods like fingerprints that eliminate the wrong person within a few hours. Unbelievable.

I read somewhere that the cops tend to not hire people who are obviously intelligent...

You mean the PD in Louisiana. Does one have a PD appointed for extradition hearings?

Oh well this is one more reason not to be poor. If you rely on the government to defend you against the government, you are likely to be disappointed.
