Iraq crisis: If America can't see the threat posed by ISIS, we need to worry
Telegraph (UK) ^ | June 12, 2014 | Jenny McCartney

Imagine you are standing on a train track with a friend, and a train is hurtling towards you both. As it draws nearer, your friend – who is, inexplicably, remaining completely motionless – says in an oddly calm voice: “That driver is clearly going very fast, which is of course regrettable, as it heightens the risk of accident, but I do not feel that this poses exactly the same threat to my interests as, say, the omnibus I encountered the other day.”

That is, in effect, how I felt when reading of the White House spokesman, Josh Earnest, sagely recommending the addressing of “unresolved issues” in Iraq earlier this week, as a response to the political and military disaster that is rapidly unfurling there. As the world knows by now, ISIS – a bloodthirsty Islamist militia so extreme that it has been disowned even by al-Qaeda – has captured Mosul, the second biggest city in Iraq, and Tikrit, the birthplace of Saddam Hussein. It has done this in the face of almost no opposition from Iraqi government forces, which fled en masse, leaving tanks and weaponry behind which have been enthusiastically appropriated by their ISIS conquerors. According to one report, ISIS members went roaring back to Syria in US Humvees.

The group clearly has considerable ambitions. The first is formally to unite the territory it holds in Syria with its new gains in Iraq, in order to establish an Islamic “caliphate” where the people would be ruled according to strict Islamic law.

But if the White House is really prepared to convince itself that ISIS isn’t a clear and significant threat to the US and the wider Western world, on numerous different levels, then it really is having a failure of imagination so profound that it should concern us all.

I read this this morning on the Powerline blog:

“Close aides to President Obama are telling confidantes that Obama has checked out and is no longer interested in being president.”

http://www.powerlineblog.com/archives/2014/06/as-iraq-crumbles-obama-responds.php

I don't know who these “close aides” might be, and the comment is made, frustratingly, without embellishment for so provocative a statement.

As a matter of interest, which faction of Islam did Obama’s paternal family belong - Shia or Sunni? If from the Sunni side we can understand his arrogance and failure to provide help to the Iraq government, which is predominantly Shia.

If America can’t even see the threat posed by Obama, it certainly will not recognize the one posed by ISIS.

The White House fully understands that ISIS is a clear and significant threat to the US and the wider Western world, on numerous different levels.

That is why they are doing nothing to slow the advance of ISIS.

That is a fact our esteemed correspondent and countless others do not comprehend.

Hell, 0bama was trying to be ISIS’s air force just a couple of months ago in Syria.

Isn’t ISIS our ally in Syria?

No, FSA is our ally in Syria, which in turn is doing joint operations with Al Nusra (Al Qaeda).

So we’re not directly helping or training Al Qaeda, but the people we are helping and supplying (FSA) are doing joint battles together with them.

FSA + Al Nusra have been having intense battles against ISIS

So 0bama’s attempts to become the air cover against Assad would not have aided ISIS?

I understand the relationships among the various factions on the ground in Syria.

But I never got the impression that there was ever a way to assist any “good guy moderate” without knowing in advance that the assistance would quite easily be converted into assistance for the bad guys (Al Nusra, ISIS).

Indeed, many people have been quoted as saying that arms delivered to any of the rebel groups ended up with the strongest players, either Al Nusra, ISIS or other bad guys.

Nevertheless, 0bama did attempt to provide that assistance. What an idiot. There were (effectively) only bad guys in Syria. And he was going to support (one way or the other) the EXACT SAME GUYS who had been killing our boys in Iraq (ISIS.)

That just frosts me. And he’s still effectively doing NOTHING but help those ISIS bustards. I see ISIS as a Saudi force (look at all those brand spanking new Tundras, and tell me who bought them and through whose port they came). 0bama is right on board with that.

SUNNI v. SHIA, and 0bama has picked his Sunni side. That’s my read. Death To America and all that.

It was Obama's plan all along to undo everything it took 8 years and 4400 American lives to achieve.

Just as it is his plan to undo everything it took us 200 years to build here at home.

The man is worse than a traitor.
