Of the many stunning revelations to emerge out of the wreckage of Mosul on Wednesday 500,000 fleeing residents, thousands of freed prisoners, unconfirmed reports of mass beheadings the one that may have the most lasting impact as Iraq descends into a possible civil war is that the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria just got extremely rich.
As insurgents rolled past the largest city in northern Iraq, an oil hub at the vital intersection of Syria, Iraq and Turkey, and into Tikrit, several gunmen stopped at Mosuls central bank. An incredible amount of cash was reportedly on hand, and the group made off with 500 billion Iraqi dinars $425 million.
The provincial governor of Nineveh, Atheel al-Nujaifi, said that the radical Islamists had lifted additional millions from numerous banks across Mosul, as well as a large quantity of gold bullion, according to the International Business Times, which called ISIS the Worlds Richest Terror Force.
The declaration isnt an easy one to fact-check. Not only is the definition of terrorist nebulous are murderous but wealthy Mexican cartels terrorists? its also exceedingly difficult to quantify a terrorist organizations finances. One of the closest stabs anyone has made comes from the well-versed Money Jihad.
According to its analysis, which drew on journalistic and academic accounts, the cash seizure would make ISIS the richest terrorist organization in the world at least for the time being.

That is what I was wondering. Can the government simply cancel the currency, or would that cause a bunch of other problems?
Don't know Gleeaikin. My best guess is they are setting charges on the rigs and pipelines for scorched earth if made to retreat but I am maybe all wet on this guess. Someone may have another better guess than mine.
It's probably the only way, but it won't happen...except maybe to us.
we need genuine military leadership , led by military .
enough of these utterly clueless and feckless civilians
It would certainly cause some short-term problems, but I think it be better off in the long run.
I remember reading about these German bank robbers who made off with about $10 million Germen dollars, or whatever the German currency is called. They refused to disclose where they hid it because they knew once they got out they’d be relatively well-off men for the rest of their days. So they pled guilty and accepted their sentences.
While they were serving their sentence, the German government changed its currency and gave the population about a year to take their money to the bank for the new currency, after which time the old currency would become worthless pieces of paper.
The robbers, for their trouble ended up with nothing in the end.
Not to mention that Jarrett and Hussein are funding terrorists with our tax dollars.
I have a bad feeling about this...
If its any consolation, those Iraqi dinars are about to become worthless.
It sure is something that all of that money was there, not adequately guarded, and the ISIS folks knew where to find it. Inside job?

Also, congrats to Obama for releasing Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi from Camp Bucca in 2009.
Congrats to America for reelecting this EPIC FAILURE!
$425M is about two tankers full of crude and the Saudis fund terrorists at a much higher rate than that!
