Cochran didn't know about Cantor loss (“What happened in Virginia?”)

Sen. Thad Cochran (R-Miss.) wasn't aware of House Majority Leader Eric Cantor’s (R-Va.) historic primary loss in an interview on Thursday.

Asked by a Fox News interviewer whether “what happened in Virginia” concerns him in his own GOP primary runoff battle with state Sen. Chris McDaniel, Cochran replied, “I don’t know what you’re talking about. What happened in Virginia?”

The interview clarified that Cantor lost “his seat,” and Cochran said that he hasn’t “really followed that campaign very closely at all."

“Really?” the interviewer asks with surprise.

“Really,” Cochran replies.

Cantor’s loss in his primary to an underfunded, largely unknown economics professor shocked the political world Tuesday night and emboldened conservative challengers across the nation — including McDaniel — who saw it as evidence that the grassroots are energized and an anti-incumbent wave is building.

It was the first time in history a sitting majority leader has lost his primary, and the loss threw House leadership into chaos this week as the GOP scrambles to choose a replacement for Cantor as majority leader.

But Cochran exhibited no knowledge, even, of Cantor’s position in leadership and the significance of his defeat. Offering to comment on the loss, despite admittedly not having paid much attention to the race, Cochran gave a generic remark about members of Congress losing reelection.

“Well that happens. Members of Congress, some win, some lose. It’s not an automatic proposition that you get reelected just because you’ve done a good job. Voters make their own decisions, and I respect their judgment,” he said.

It’s comical. His defeat in a week and a half will be such a delight!

He could have retired. He SHOULD have retired. But McConnell and Barbour talked him into running again so he could resign and they could get an appointed stooge.

Instead, the PEOPLE will choose their OWN representative in the US Senate. And that frightens the hell out of them. That’s very telling.

Poor soul probably didn’t even know what day it was. If the reporter had asked him to name his favorite football team he’d probably say “Butterscotch”.

It is clear Cochran has mental issues and is only a prop for Haley Barbour
and the GOPe’s. As such, he is unfit to serve. It also explains why his
campaign has been hiding him from debates and media.

He does have a wife, but he abandoned her in a Mississippi nursing home some years ago. Perhaps they can share a room.

I saw the video - I wonder if he has a bit of dementia. It seems clear from the video that he did not know that Cantor had lost, which in his position is really bizarre.

Yup! McDaniel announced before they could choose a “successor” so they had to strong-arm an old man into running again. And now their despicable influence will be gone.

As Trent Lott has said “we don’t need any more Jim DeMint disciples in the Senate.”

Johnson, Ayotte, Rubio and Paul have all been co-opted but Cruz and Lee are standing strong and will attract more followers.

“Man, that puts him in line for the presidency.”

Why do you say that? Because he’d be made President Pro Tem? Hatch will be that.

I think that it’s important to understand why the Republican leadership in Washington and Mississippi and big donors like Michael Bloomberg were willing to support him when they had to know that he had become mentally unfit to serve.

They did it because Cochran had demonstrated over the years a willingness to do what lobbyists and deep pocket shakers and movers wanted him to do as long as he got the pork projects to take back home to Mississippi that kept him in his Senate seat. If the Republicans take the Senate, he is in line to be the Chairman of the Senate Appropriations Committee. What better position for a man who will willingly do what his handlers demand. When he became obviously incapable of serving, he would be told to resign and Haley Barbour would take his place.

Most of this was not known until McDaniel forced a runoff, it’s hard to see how he can win now.

Oh My God! A text book illustration of what being “out of touch” looks and sounds like. I don’t even blame him completely, he’s been immersed in a war of rhetoric with his opposing candidate. Cochran’s campaign managers have done him a huge diservice. They are supposed to keep their man on top of his game in reference to current events. If I was the other guy, I would comment on this as little as is possible. The blunder speaks and reeks for itself!
