THE United States will be able to build permanent military facilities on Australian soil and expand to locations across the country under a deal struck between Tony Abbott and Barack Obama.

The deal — which initially covers up to 2500 US forces rotating through Darwin but can be expanded — will allow the US to bring warships, planes and troops in Australia.

New bases can be set up across the country and the number of troops increased without limit over 25 years under the deal, senior US officials confirmed.

.....

"The United States has paid a very high price to secure freedom and prosperity for many countries, not just itself," he said.

"And the United States should never have to do all that work on its own."

.....

Mr Abbott said the deal “has the potential” to see US troops based in locations other than Darwin.

Good, we are going to need those bases as China goes for global domination.

Is this something like the Russian troops that are being housed here? There was an article on FR on this a while back. Doing others dirty work so that patriotism doesn’t get in the way?

I’m not a fan of this unless it is by limiting them by surgical strikes and drone attacks - still we had a hand in allowing the mess - it has always been there but Saddam and his ruthless mob kept them in check. These people don’t seem to understand anything but ruthless, brutal force.

He won’t be your President forever. We have to deal with things as they are now, and wait.

Let’s be fair. I would say this is Obama’s greatest foreign policy triumph.

Which is kind of sad. The base there is a good idea, but I honestly can’t think of anything better he’s done in the international arena. Correct me if I’m wrong.

Sorry didn’t read the whole thing thought this was about the agreement on Iraq!

A base here would make the Greens go apoplectic - anything that causes that is ok in my book!

The Japanese already had new Australian money printed before their defeat by the US at the Battle of the Coral Sea.

A US submarine man who quits, moves to Australia and serves there can get citizenship, I heard, in 2 years, usually.

Gosh I WONDER what all this is prep for, right?

Abbot would be advised to wait to see the ultimate accomplishment of the US, a nearly accomplished Caliphate in a new defined territory spanning Iraq and Syria, is actually established and what kind of a realtionship the US has with it. The answer should come about shortly.

IF the US becomes more allied with Muslims than it already is, Australia must reconsider with unpleasant, unsettling deliberations. Sunni Muslims have decided the time is ripe, with enough dictators removed, and the US an ally in Syria, Assad on the ropes with Egypt and Afganistan still outstanding in the wings, to form a Caliphate.

In the meanwhile, as Baghdad is about to fall, the chief is taking time off, raising campaign funds, and playing golf. Is this not a kind of “Bergdahl” abandonment of pressing national and military issues? Australia’s Abbott surely has noticed some irregularities present in his own national security affairs.

“Good, we are going to need those bases as China goes for global domination”

And Australia doesn’t want to out on a limb, all by itself, with a stronger and more aggressive China, either.

I know, sometimes it can be chilling to be reading WWII history and be reminded of Australia’s vulnerability, hanging out there alone.

Agreed. There's no way obama helps the US or the military unless there's some benefit to democrats or America's enemies. Maybe a major $ kickback?
