CANNON BALL, N.D. (AP) - President Barack Obama on Friday became only the third U.S. sitting president in eight decades to set foot in Indian Country, encountering both the wonder of Native American culture and the struggle of tribal life on a breeze-whipped afternoon in the prairie. Amid snapping flags and colorful, befeathered dancers, Obama declared that there was more the U.S. could do to help Native Americans.

Well we could start by stripping them of their special rights.

Oh no, not evil flippant white people.

The tribes vote almost exclusively Democrat, so apparently they want to stay poor and on the res. Its your choice, so don't whine to us about it.

True that, Hawk, about the Democrats.

My hometown Rez votes better than 90 percent democrat but we have bigtime oil now and voting isn’t exactly the priority now.

I do disagree with you about the Cobell settlement. The BIA was staffed and directed by tribal members when all that money went a-missing.

In other words taxpayer dollars were allocated to the BIA, the BIA dispersed it at the federal and tribal level, and the money disappeared.

Then individuals (including Mrs. Cobell) sued for return of all the missing millions and when they won the taxpayers got to pony up again.

Worst of it all is that the tribal members in my area got like, what, $2,000 tops? Tribal bigwigs and lawyers took far and away most of the loot, as always.

Haven’t seen you around lately FH...good to find you here.

“”For starters — close the reservations and dismantle the Native American “nations.””

Exactly how many more centuries are we to pay out the nose for our ancestors’ bringing them out of the “Stone Age”.

We’ve done enough damage to them. They have been “helped” to death.

We’re from the federal government, and we’re here to help.
We found a Madagascar hissing cockroach in the casino parking lot so, sorry—we’re going to have to close you down.
Glad to help.

Take it from me (a true American Indian) all most all tribes are Democrat voters ,I’d say up to 90% or even more.

Yes. If you look at county-by-county electoral maps, and see blue patchs in areas of the Western US where there are no big cities, those patches are usually reservations.

Natives would do much better helping themselves than looking to the US gov’t for help. That goes for everyone, BTW.

the best thing that the federal gov’t could do for “native Americans” is get them the hell off reservations and welfare....get them into the mainstream of american life force them to get educated, get regular jobs and conform to normality as it exists in society......the 1800’s are over...grow up and get with the program!!!!

According to one source, FDR visited the Cherokee reservation in North Carolina in 1934 and Clinton visited the Pine Ridge reservation in North Dakota in 1999. If they would have gone back 9 decades, they would have had to mention that Calvin Coolidge visited the Sioux reservation in South Dakota in 1927, where he was adopted into the Sioux Nation. But it just wouldn’t do to acknowledge that the first sitting President to visit an Indian reservation was Republican. It wouldn’t fit the meme.

Many Native Americans are in the condition they are precisely because of all that government “help” over the years. The more government decides to help some group the more likely that group will become dependent and helpless.
