Idaho Republican Rep. Raul Labrador announced a late-entry bid for Majority Leader but faces a steep climb after Whip Kevin McCarthy has already garnered significant support over the past three days. Eric Cantor’s Tuesday defeat sent a clear message that “Americans are looking for a change in the status quo," Labraodor said in a statement.

McCarthy is the whip. He knows how to count and he already has this wrapped up. But the Majority Leader has to be re-elected by the Republicans in January for the new Congress. Instead of running now and getting his butt kicked, Labrador would be better off getting his ducks in a row and lining up his own support in preparation for the election in January. He may have a whole crop of new freshmen to draw from.

You might be right, but I don’t think it sends the right message to the base to just lay down.

But it does hang the 'loser' tag on Labrador, and come January the conservatives might think twice about running him again. So if all he wants to do is just run someone against McCarthy to keep him from being elected unopposed, well and good. If he really wants to be Majority Leader then he does his cause little good by running now.

The problem is that behind the scenes the supposed constitutional conservatives caved. It doesn't work when they put off the fight for another day. Whoever gets that post could push for lame duck session amnesty.

They should've had a conservative ready to take up the fight unless they weren't planning to challenge Boehner for the Speaker post in January. I think they showed us that we don't have hardly any 'pubs in the HOR who are true constitutional conservatives. These are the same people who could've stopped Boehner from being Speaker this term.

We should not excuse their lack of a plan to take leadership.

Agreed. Very little leadership from anyone in the House....including the few conservatives.

Very little leadership in the GOP....except Cruz

Was Reagan labeled as a “loser” after he lost the nomination to Ford in 1976?

No argument there. McCarthy was elected whip on January 3, 2011. He will be elected leader because he began preparing for that run on January 4, 2011. The true conservative faction in Congress needs to unite and begin planning for things like this. Right now they're running around as a bunch of independents and the GOPe can ignore them, or pay lip service to them, because they are better organized and better prepared. The Tea Party needs to emulate the establishment in that respect and realize that they're not going to accomplish much unless they can beat the GOPe at their own game.

Had Reagan won the nomination and loss the election in 1976 he would have been. Just like McCain and Romney.

Since Rep Labrador is from the class of 2010.. only 2 terms in the House, I believe he is just a "pawn" so that McCarthy is not unopposed. Once the class of 2014 is elected and new caucus elections in January 2015, the real leaders of the conservative wing, like Rep Hesterling will step up. Perhaps there's a conservative lining up the votes to get the Whip job now that McCarthy will vacate.

And how many votes did Boehner have to cancel at last minute because the Whip (McCarthy) didn't get the votes to make it happen? So why do RINOs want to give him a promotion?

McCarthy is a poke in the eye by Boener and the establishment GOP crowd to those that demand a more conservative GOP. Compared to Cantor, McCarthy is more liberal, more corrupt and has about half the intelligence. It seems Boener et al want to do to the GOP what Obama has done to the country.

Now that RINO Cantor is gone (assuming his write in candidacy fails or Brat says something totally stupid or is unprepared for the “gotcha” question that is coming) then I would hate so see RINO McCarthy get the post.
As others have pointed out, the establishment is not scared but pissed off. Labrador, if conservative, can beat them at their own game, if he plans ahead. But if he is a true Republican he is a marksman at shooting himself in the foot and practiced in snatching defeat from the jaws of victory. The elitist Republican establishment is as dumb as a bag of hammers when it comes to strategy.

Didn't the House have the votes for TARP right before it was defeated? I know, only first time but members still have the right to vote the way they want if they change their mind.

Therein lies the problem, the good ole boy, "it's my turn" network in government. Shouldn't matter how many terms these people have served if they're qualified.

If we want to get rid of the McCains and Cochrans we need to stop requiring they do their time before they can participate in Congress.

Cantor is not mounting a write-in campaign. He’s not a Murkowski.

The fact that he is stepping down as Majority Leader should be proof enough of that. He will retire with whatever dignity he has left.

Congressional leaders do not stay in congress after losing their leadership role, or getting a demotion... unless they’re Nancy Pelosi. But then again, it’s a matter of personal dignity, and Pelosi has none.
