Hong Kong does not enjoy “full autonomy” and must accept Beijing’s control and oversight, China announced on Tuesday, less than a week after more than 100,000 protesters gathered in the former colony to berate the Communist Party and demand greater democratic rights.
In a lengthy and controversial “white paper”, China's powerful State Council claimed “comprehensive jurisdiction” over the former British colony, which returned to Chinese hands in 1997.
Hong Kong held no “residual power” and while it enjoyed considerable independence from Beijing, “the central government has the power of oversight over the high degree of autonomy,” it added. …

Look at Venezuela, they can’t even provide their citizens with water.
Well, supposedly when Hong Kong reverted to China in 1997, the Chinese said that they would have “one country/two systems”, and that Hong Kong would be some special region in China.
Not too hard to believe that the Chinese communists would go back on their promises to let Hong Kong be a region with greater economic and political freedoms than the rest of China.
This is the same Red China that annexed Tibet violently in 1950. Their word is useless.
I’m surprised it took this long. Socialists have no problem killing the Golden Goose once they’ve filled their own purse.
Yup. Ego and emotion trump fact based reality.
They still know where their economic bread is buttered... for now. A time may come when they will tire of it all.
Well they are balancing two glories.
They felt it glorious to be rich, and that’s why they eased their animus towards the West. The West had money, they had slaves.
They also feel it glorious to be admired. To get railed at cuts into this and ultimately is probably counterproductive.
