It should be noted that slaughtering surrendered POWs as a tactic is, pardon the expression, a two-edged sword.

It gives uncommitted soldiers massive incentive to run away before they can be captured. It also gives soldiers who don’t have much chance to escape a really good incentive not to surrender. Finally, it pretty much ensures any of your own who are captured won’t be spared.

Historically, most armies have considered the net effect being to make reasonable treatment of prisoners profitable.

I don’t believe it is hyperbole to think that it may now be too late to stop this conflict from growing into a regional war across the whole middle east. Syria and Iraq are now in chaos. Iran will soon jump in which could bring in most of the Arabian peninsula. After that central Asia and North Africa could follow depending on how the war goes.
