Sources: Lois Lerner’s emails likely gone forever

Ex-IRS official Lois Lerner’s crashed hard drive has been recycled, making it likely the lost emails of the lightening rod in the tea party targeting controversy will never be found, according to multiple sources.

“We’ve been informed that the hard drive has been thrown away,” said Sen. Orrin Hatch of Utah, the top Republican on the Finance Committee, in a brief hallway interview.

Two additional sources told POLITICO the same late on Wednesday, citing IRS officials.

It may just be standard government procedure, but the revelation is significant because some lawmakers and observers thought there was a way that tech experts could revive Lerner’s emails after they were washed away in a computer crash in the summer of 2011. Oversight Chairman Darrell Issa (R-Calif.), for example, subpoenaed her damaged hard drive earlier this week, when he asked for “all hard drives, external drives, thumb drives, and computers” and “all electronic communication devices the IRS issued to Lois G. Lerner.”

“IT experts have weighed in and said yes — we can get those” emails, said Rep. Charles Boustany (R-La.) earlier Wednesday.

The latest news suggests such professionals may never get the chance to try again — and the IRS has said even its criminal investigators who specialize in rebuilding hard drives to recover hidden information from criminals were unable to restore the data back in 2011. But this is only likely to further enrage Republicans, who are fuming over the matter and suspect Washington officials drove the selective scrutiny.

OK, so the hard drive was tossed in the trash.

That means that some people are going to jail for perjury.

It also means that what was in the emails must have implicated the President. Why else would the trashers risk going to jail?

And why didn’t she tell Congress her system had crashed months or years ago? Makes NO sense.

Throw that skank in jail until she rots...or coughs up the evidence.

This is clearly becoming a farce and everyone in DC puts up with it.

I’m surprised the “lost emails” don’t create another Rahm “crises we can’t waste” to spend billions more to “secure future emails”.

Lies on top of lies on top of lies. And the money is funneled off to DNC coffers.

unless the server exploded, and the redundant server, and the redundant redundant server, in which case all of us no longer owe taxes since everything is gone, the data is still there, whether Lerner’s personal hard drive vaporized or not

and the IRS has said even its criminal investigators who specialize in rebuilding hard drives to recover hidden information from criminals were unable to restore the data back in 2011.

They need to produce the investigators and the documentation describing the work done. It's completely unbelievable anyway. I restore data from mechanically failing drives all the time using available recovery software and a lot of patience. If I can't recover the data, I just ship it to recovery professionals with a clean room and so far they haven't failed. Naturally, they claim to have thrown the drive away as if the emails were only stored in one location on a personal computer.

Nothing is ever lost forever..they can always retrieve it, but considering the White House and Obama’s minions helped destroy the evidence, it might be gone forever..unless the NSA has it, and we all know the NSA won’t help out Conservatives

Who writes this crap? Surely the politico knows e-mail depends on the server not the hard drive. I can read 10 year old e-mail from 3 laptops ago simply by logging in to my account.

Issa should offer a billion dollar reward to the first person to produce the emails. Dems shouldn’t have a problem with that since they insist it can’t be done.

Lois Lerner could have set her PC on fire, shot holes through it with a .50 cal machine gun, dropped it into the Marianas Trench and...

she could still go to any other PC on the IRS’s network and access all her email.

Of course it’s all still there.

That was the lesson of Iran-Contra - there’s always a copy of e-mails somewhere.

But just the fact that the White House is desperately trying the spread the lie that “the e-mails are all gone, so we might as well just give up pursuing this issue” says how utterly damaging these e-mails really are!!

Emails are not kept on hard drives... they are kept on backnup servers. If at my bank I had to forget all my deals and clients just because of a hard drive crash, I dont think the IRS would buy it.

No one is so stupid to believe that Lois Lerner's email resided only on ONE HD. That is the most ludicrous thing I have ever heard and I am no IT Pro. The recipients of her emails would have them, and if they have deleted their agencies would have stored backups under FED LAW.

What about the hard drive on the mail server? Also, what about her personal computer and secret email account, that everyone in DC seems to have for just such occasions?

According to the regs she was supposed to print them out.

Typically, in such an environment, this goes to a network printer.

Which has it's own hard drive...
