The five black men who were wrongfully convicted in the 1989 beating and rape of a Central Park jogger have agreed to a $40 million settlement with the city, a source familiar with the terms said Thursday. The five young men — whose arrests and trials made national headlines and stirred the city’s simmering racial tensions — had been locked in a bitter civil rights lawsuit with the city for years after their convictions were vacated. When now Mayor de Blasio ran for election last year, he promised to reach a deal.

Trump was right calling for the death penalty.
Those youths would not have got near the needle at the time. It would have been thrown out by then. It would have taken 30 years to execute those convicted and sitting on death row.
Little doubt in my mind that they were in fact guilty.
In most of these cases another person who has met with the perps and knows what happened will confess. Usually someone with nothing to lose.

Okay what evidence? Why was that not found originally? Since everyone was postive when the original convictions took place why should we be positive about this now?

If New York didn’t want this it oughtn’t have voted in Blasio who basically singlehandedly okayed it.
There is a whole raft of political weirdness here. The appeals court overturned the old conviction. Now normally that is not the end of the story. The onus is now on those who would not hold a new trial with all the evidence, real or purported. New York whiffed. Shouldn’t be surprised.
What a country! You can gang beat a jogger half to death, but if you are a black teen , you get a 40 million dollar jackpot, because although you admitted to beating her half dead and leaving her unconscious on the street, technically you didn’t do the actual “R” deed-

It seems craziness. This should have been easy from a prosecution point of view. Where it was NOT easy was from a racial appeasement point of view. Would everyone have been happier had there been an all black police force and court to take care of it? It stank like a dead skunk.
