The White House believes that the election of a new House leadership team has opened up an opportunity to pass immigration reform this summer, presidential adviser Valerie Jarrett said Friday.
Jarrett said the change necessitated by Rep. Eric Cantors (R-Va.) surprising primary loss gives new life to immigration reform.
Theres a change in leadership obviously with Cantors loss and so we have an opportunity with a new team in place in the House to act, Jarrett told reporters at a Christian Science Monitor breakfast on Friday. President Obama believes this summer is a pivotal opportunity for us to get comprehensive immigration reform passed through the House, she added.
In a historic upset earlier this month, Cantor lost his primary to Tea Party challenger David Brat, who repeatedly accused the Republican lawmaker of supporting amnesty for illegal immigrants. On Thursday, Republicans elected Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) to replace Cantor as majority leader.
Conventional wisdom has held that Cantors loss would spook already wary Republican leaders from pursuing immigration reform legislation over the summer.
But Jarrett said in discussions with business leaders in recent days that nobody has said to me they thought his defeat was because of immigration reform. In recent days, Jarrett shared a dinner with News Corp. chairman Rupert Murdoch and a breakfast with the Business Roundtable to discuss the topic.
Jarrett also noted that Cantor himself disputed the notion that immigration was to blame during an interview on Sunday.
"I dont think there is any one reason for the outcome of the election," Cantor told CNN.
Jarrett also indicated that Republican lawmakers had told the White House they would be more able to address immigration reform after the primaries had concluded.
Leading up to the election what we were hearing from the House is well wait until the primary season are over, Jarrett said. So in a sense, cool your jets, lets get through the primary season, and then with that behind us between the primary and the end of the summer we have an opportunity. And so, the elections over now.
Jarrett also said the administration was looking at executive actions he could take that would be building upon the deferred action program he announced in 2012, which affords some children who came to the U.S. illegally temporary legal status.
Hes looking at what are the options he has under the executive powers he has, Jarrett said. I dont want to prejudge what those might be.
Those quotes should say, “President Jarrett said...”
She seems to be emerging from her coffin more and more.
Might even see her in the light of day.
Why all the talk about immigration reform?
Emporer Obama has alredy reformed it on his own.
What a liar she is.
Ha. “nobody has said to me they thought his defeat was because of immigration reform.
She probably started of with the line “don’t tell me why he lost, we all know that. I just want to be able to spin a lie to the american people”
So Pres. Jarrett told Rupert Murdoch that Fox News should “cool it” until the GOP primaries are over and the “moderate” RINOs can screw us during that lame duck season.
I have news for Muslimah Jarrett.
ANY person I will vote for in 2014 or after will NOT have uttered the words “Amnesty, Comprehensive Immigration Reform, Immigration Reform, Pathway to Citizenship, Normalization, Legalization, or any other equivocation. I don’t care who they are or how conservative they profess to be.
The Obama DREAMER WAR ON CHILDREN continues at the Southern US Border with the very hostile Nation of Mexico.
The Obama DREAMER WAR ON CHILDREN is an excellent preview of what Obama wants Boehner”s Amnesty Bill to accomplish: Destroy America by replacing the resident population.
She may be right...
not said here, but mentioned in some blurb in the last day or two, was a shared meal with President Jarrett and Boehner.
And Wasserman Schultz says the Republican party has gone even further to the right with the TEA Party victories.
So who is lying?
With our luck, probably true.
I am afraid the old witch is correct. The GOP Establishment/Chamber of Crony Corporatists are hell bent on Amnesty, even if it destroys the party forever. They know that if they lose their Congressional seats they'll get some cush lobbyist or consulting job with the Chamber.
Powerful forces are certainly arrayed against us. As you wrote, they have the GOPe and Chamber of Crony Corporatists pushing hard for “comprehensive immigration reform”, AKA AMNESTY! But that’s not all, they also have the Democrats, lock, stock, and barrel. By Democrats, I also mean the media, education establishment, and many others in positions of power and influence. What they do NOT have is We the People, otherwise they would have passed their amnesty a long, long time ago. Don’t forget that despite some of the push polls. We the People oppose amnesty.
The leadership elections were held quickly after Cantor’s loss to reassert GOPe control of the Republicans in the House and get ready for the inevitable push to “reform” immigration.
95 percent of elected Republicans are not real conservatives anyway, they talk a good game.
It's only plain logic and simple math, but there it is.
These people are delusional to think that people don’t’ notice that our southern border is open.
The communist DemocRATS aren’t going to be happy until Americans are outnumbered at the polls here in this country.
She is right.
That bastard Eunuch Boehner turned defeat into victory. He replaced Cantor with an even more avid proponent of Illegal Invaders - McCarthy and replace McCarthy as whip with that sleezey Scalise - another henchman of his.
Guess they didn’t get the memo.
At this point, I would not vote for Scalise, or McCarthy or Boehner in a general election. They are irredeemable and no better than a Democrat. Better to flush them out by voting Democrats instead and then replace the Dems later. I think we could do that and still control the House easily and more effectively.
