The IRS Had a Contract With an Email Backup Company
reason.com ^ | June 20, 2014 | By Peter Suderman

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) said it can't provide emails sent between 2009 and 2011 that were requested by congressional investigators because of hard drive crashes.

The agency said that emails stored on dead drives were lost forever because its email backup tapes were recycled every six months, and employees were responsible for keeping their own long-term archives.

The IRS had a contract with email backup service vendor Sonasoft starting in 2005, according to FedSpending.org, which lists the contract as being for "automatic data processing services." Sonasoft's motto is "email archiving done right," and the company lists the IRS as a customer.

In 2009, Sonasoft even sent out a Tweet advertising its work for the IRS...

I have seen that Gowdy and Gohmert don’t let ridicule stop them from doing what is right.

If they follow FR or know about us, they would appreciate the suggestions offered here. And they would be helpful in hearings that HAVE to be begun to unravel this latest in a long list of stupid things government can do to gullible people!

I thought Blackberry had their own servers and transmission lines. The was why their mail was more “secure” compared to other providers.

Remember when the Islamists were shooting up folks in that 6 star India hotel?? The Islamist were using Blackberries, and LE could not look into their communications

I loved those two movies. Killer Tomatoes was a classic Grade B spoof. “Oh look! It got little Timmy!”

Mars Attacks was a political spoof as well. There was plenty of nuance and innuendo with regard to our
politicians and the process.

Unfortunately, the Lois Lerner movie is much more serious.

"Did anyone ask about the servers, back up tapes, etc? If someone doesn’t start asking then this whole thing is just for show. Paul Ryan had more than one opening but was more concerned about getting his speech into a sound byte."

Good points. The hearing seems deliberately shallow. There is no followup and no questions about servers, network backup, office site storage, etc.

If it’s the same thing that the SEC currently requires for stockbrokers, then absolutely yes. Anything really old not immediately accessible on their servers gets burned to disc and saved indefinitely.

Same should now be required for all branches of government.

I assume Lerner is complicit, and the WH needs plausible deniability.

No IT work orders, no time sheets, no trace whatsoever of tampering.

A Stuxnet type worm could perform the task, with Lerners knowledge and passive assistance (ie. not shutting down her PC overnight or over the weekend)

If these traitorous bastards can’t find the “missing” emails then it’s time we employ some of the Left’s tactics. We “find” the emails! We create some damning emails and read them aloud in the hearings! Imagine Rep. Camp saying “we’ve been able to secure these emails and what we’ve found is criminal. It seems Ms. Lerner directly contacted President Obama and Valerie Jarrett and discussed the targeting of tea party groups. These emails also implicate at least 114 others including IRS employees and members of congress. I’ll now ask the Capitol Police to take Mr. Koskinen, Rep. Cummings and Rep. Levin into custody. Warrants will be issued for the others. This hearing is adjourned.” That’s how you fight fire with fire.

Betting the 3rd party provider performs multiyear archive service.

IRS retains current “six month” history.
IRS, on a rolling basis, sends the “seventh” month out to an Iron Mountain or some service for long term Archiving
*************************
Although they are not using IBM’s DFHSM for archiving e:mails the scheme would be similar with multiple levels of backup , each more distant and cheaper than the prior ... first level is on an online server , uncompressed and instantly retrievable ,, covers perhaps data that is less than 1 year old. ,, second level would be compressed on a server , slower ,, might take a few minutes ... third level would be archived to tape backup for data more than a few years old ,, backup tapes , if not needed for compliance , would be periodically recycled with copies of data that has been deleted off of online servers deleted off of backup tapes after a period of time (5 years , 7 years...) has passed ,, the “deleted” data is still there of course until a tape recycle event where the “gas” is compressed out of the tapes.

In 2014 when I can buy a 1TB drive for well under $100 there is no real reason for deleting anything. I ran a datacenter back in the late 1980’s early 1990’s with a total of 3tb of dasd storage and 7 LARGE mainframe computers (all 308x and 309x series) ,,, it was a HUGE datacenter ... today a single , under $1000 server can archive that entire datacenter 2x over with a raid that provides hot-swap backup and data continuity.

“If they did destroy them, and I don’t doubt that they did, a lot of people would have had to know about it. Start bearing down on them.”

We are all looking at the tactical rather than the strategic.

There is a major election coming up. If Republicans take the senate and hold the house, they will have 2 full years with no democrat opposition to get what they need. At that time, you ask Eric holder to get a special prosecutor. He says no, you impeach and “remove” him from office. And right on down the line.

You put Obama on an island.

This isn’t going anywhere. Nor is any scandal. And since we in summer, congress will let out to September, so good luck doing anything.

First and only priority right now is to win the senate. At any cost. We are seeing what Cruz can do in the minority. Imagine what he can do in the majority!

Good catch!!

About the 4 minute mark......customer complain searches take three to five minutes!!!!
Why does the IRS need 14 months to get search results on Lerners e-mails? Did they misspell Lois’s name for the search paramaters

Been reading a lot about this mess as we all have. I suppose I clicked your post to reply to kind of randomly but also wanted your thoughts -

Isn’t it the plan for them to have us chase info down and spend/waste time?
Shouldn’t _they_ be the ones motivated to get the info?
Why aren’t they?
I think they need some motivation.

But what will motivate them to choose to acquire the information instead of delay? What _can_ be done to motivate them?

Is there overlap?

Tanknetter is correct ,, this must target vendors or it will go nowhere.. The datacenter I mentioned had (back then anyway) huge IRS data storage contracts and Bureau of Indian Affairs contracts ,, even 30 years ago this would have been unthinkable.

IBM has a great education center in the D.C. area that has experts that can be called ,, if “Cookie” is still teaching there get her.

The House green lighted presidential criminality when it did nothing of substance over voter intimidation in Philly 2008, nor over Fast and Furious.

We should have stopped him at the dinner roll.

Corporate exec is not a government flack. Tell him to turn over the Lerner EMails, or we will find a judge to give you a nice orange jumpsuit, after we find you in contempt...

I don’t think that is quite how that works, but if they have contracts with the US government, then they are subject to congressional oversight. also the BB are connected via a service provider such as verison, AT&T, etc... and they also backup data a long time, you know that the NSA has this data.

True...

But I would think a mass flooding of the congressional switchboard is in order first thing Monday...

Not just these two guys...

Our expectations (as constituents) for immediate results, is NOT unrealistic...

I would not mince words, or dilly dally around the staffer that fields these calls either...

These elected officials do have a schedule, they do have many obligation and things to attend too...But their staff, that’s what they get paid the big bucks for...And the more pile of constituent calls they get the more attention and fervor they apply to this...

It IS a terrible game we must play, and the returns are minimal, if not even noticeable...

AND EVERYTHING WILL BE WORKING AGAINST OUR EXPECTATIONS...
