Why do Super Bowl winners call themselves world champions when the USA is not the entire world and none of the American football teams have played teams outside the US?

Why do Super Bowl winners call themselves world championsBecause there is not another team in the world who could make it through the playoffs and win the Super Bowl. It's not like soccer or hockey, where there is enough international competition to make such a claim questionable.
