Dick Cheney: Rand Paul Is Wrong On Foreign Policy
Business Insider ^ | 06/22/2014 | Hunter Walker

Posted on 06/22/2014 10:48:17 AM PDT by SeekAndFind

ormer Vice President Dick Cheney fired back Sunday after Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) criticized his position on Iraq. In an appearance on ABC's "This Week," Cheney argued Paul, who is widely seen as a potential presidential candidate in 2016, is an "isolationist" who doesn't understand the "absolutely essential" need for America to be involved in the Middle East.

"Now, Rand Paul and — by my standards, as I look at his — his philosophy, is basically an isolationist. That didn't work in the 1930s, it sure as heck won't work in the aftermath of 9/11, when 19 guys armed with airline tickets and box cutters came all the way from Afghanistan and killed 3,000 of our citizens," Cheney said, according to a rush transcript of the show

Paul addressed Cheney's position on Iraq in an interview with NBC that aired on "Meet The Press" Sunday. In that interview, Paul critiqued a Wall Street Journal op-ed written by Cheney and his daughter, Liz, that was critical of President Barack Obama's foreign policy and handling of the crisis in Iraq. The Cheneys said Obama's "rhetoric" about ending the Iraq War had "come crashing into reality" after troop withdrawals were followed by jihadists from the group Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIS) taking territory in the country. Paul argued Cheney and others who supported the Iraq War were primarily to blame for many of the current issues in the Middle East.

"What’s going on now — I don’t blame on President Obama. Has he really got the solution? Maybe there is no solution. But I do blame the Iraq War on the chaos that is in the Middle East," Paul said. "I also blame those who are for the Iraq War for emboldening Iran.

"But he endorses Obama's?"

Yes. Obama is a Realist. Powell is a Realist.

Powell doesn't support NeoCons. Nor does not support Liberal Interventionists.

A lot of people don't remember this, but Bill Clinton retained Colin Powell as Chairman of the Joint Chiefs. Powell quickly resigned because he detested Madeline Albright who was a Liberal Interventionist.

Obama and Kerry are Realists

Unbelievable! You've been here on Free Republic since 1998 and post this? So much for seniority and tenure granting wisdom. John Kerry and hussien obama are traitors! The boss made this point quite clear when he wrote:

Rand Paul, Barrack Obama, John Kerry, Hillary, et all, all share similar views on foreign policy.

And as for Vice-President Richard Cheney, he was and is a Patriot who truly loves America. Yes, not 100% prefect, but the policies that he and President George W. Bush enacted kept America safe and secure for eight years.

On a personal note, I'm in my 70s and during the years of the Bush/Cheney administration, I was able to enjoy a blissful, good night's sleep during that whole time. Ever since the obama/holder cabal usurped power, that's not been the case. The world has been in continual crisis mode, day-after-day, under their "blame America first" regime.

Well, I like Cheney’s viewpoints much better than Powell, Obama, Hillary, Kerry or Paul’s. I do not believe we should give up our position in the world or give the totalitarians and barbarians a free hand to do as they please unopposed. History repeats itself.

You live in a freaking dream world. There are only two possible reasons that Obama failed to renew the SOFA with Iraq. Politicsa and politics. He did what he wanted, he got all troops out of Iraq and in doing so invited the caliphate folks to open up shop. Good Lord man, open your eyes.

I can't separate the two. I see them as two different elements of the same threat to my freedom: big-government globalism.

A nation that throws away thousands of lives and hundreds of billions of dollars on a military campaign halfway around the world, while at the same time refusing to protect its own borders, isn't even a real country anymore and no longer has the moral authority to demand any kind of loyalty from its citizenry.

And as for Vice-President Richard Cheney, he was and is a Patriot who truly loves America.

When it came time for Richard Cheney to stand up as a "Patriot," he went out and got five draft deferments rather than take his place among all the real patriots who did what they were told and showed up when drafted. In his own words: "I had other priorities in the 60's than military service."

Patriot, my @ss.

"I had other priorities in the 60's than military service."

That quote from Vice-President Richard B. Cheney is sourced by commie organs such as these:

Those are the same sources that publish scurrilous lies about Ted Nugent's actions to avoid the draft. The real draft dodger is American-hating KKKlintoon.

That quote was originally published in the Washington Post. I’m not aware that Cheney has ever denied saying that.

RE: Cheney’s philosophy might have worked in the WWII era, when there were still more patriots than scoundrels in DC

I wonder why Rand Paul did not include this observation in his argument...

The hard left Washington Post (Pravda on the Potomac) is not a credible source for anything. It's anti-American stance of printing lie after lie under the Ben Bradlee/Kay Graham era continues unabated to this day.

One of its prominently featured columnists is the smugly arrogant Eugene Robinson who routinely pushes the commie line and is a belligerent champion of the racist quota system.

Are you even disputing the fact that Richard (”the Patriot”) Cheney secured five draft deferments during the Vietnam War in the 1960s?

Why not? Wouldn’t be even be one of the top 5 reality based facts being denied on this thread.

That slimy leftist talking point has been well covered right here on Free Republic, a source that is credible unlike The Nation, Slate and the American-hating Washington Post, rightly called Compost by Patriot Mark Levin.

One quote, among many, from that thread makes it all abundantly clear:

Cheney led the military as Secretary of Defense from 1988 to 1992? Didn't I read somewhere that during this watch the US became embroiled in a shooting war? If that's all true, then didn't Cheney serve the US in a military capacity (though not in uniform) for approximately four years?

And consider this:

Dick Cheney spent most of his life strengthening the military and our country, supporting our troops and serving as an achieving, positive force in the United States Government.

To character Vice-President Cheney as anything other than a Patriot is a liberal lie.

There are countless articles on the internet pointing out that the Iraqi govt/parliment insisted on legal authority over US troops which was not acceptable.

I am also aware that, at the time, some republicans like Karl Rove complained that Obama could have got the immunity from prosecution if he had handled it as an executive action, requiring only that Maliki and Obama sign it and leave the Iraqi parliament out of it.

But the Iraqi Parliament approved the SOFA that Bush signed so they needed to approve the SOFA that Obama would have signed.

LOL.

There's a reason why people like Bill Clinton and Dick Cheney who were pursuing careers in politics did what they felt they needed to do to dodge the draft. They knew damn well that this country is filled with voters -- from all over the political spectrum -- who would bend over backwards to make excuses for them.

Cheney never served in uniform. He took deferments rather than serving in Vietnam. If being in office during military action constitutes military service, then draft-dodging Bill Clinton is a military “veteran” because he was president during the Kosovo bombing.

As usual, Dick Cheney is spot on in his analysis. Bo has changed the rules of engagement in order to allow the enemy advantage.

Cheney never served in uniform.

This obsession with donning a military uniform is absurd. Vice-President Richard Cheney advanced the cause of America's interests and was part of the team that kept us safe and secure for eight years. Contrast what Cheney did with some of those who wore the uniform but advanced commie causes.

Unhinged nutcase Oliver Stone

Al "Idiot" Gore.

Markos Moulitsas of the subversive Daily Kos

Far-left favorite Charles Rangle

And there are other American-hating liberals who "served" such as the trio of CBS liars: Bob Scheiffer, Charles Osgood and Steve Kroft. The reality is that good men such as Vice-President Richard B. Cheney, Rush Limbaugh, Ted Nugent, Mark Levin and -- to some extent -- even Sean Hannity, though they may not have worn the uniform, have without question done more for America and our great military than any number of those who happened to "serve".
