Detroit activists call for UN help as city shuts off water for thousands

Detroit has too much of some things – stray dogs, abandoned houses – and not enough of others, such as residents who pay their water bills.

The latest sign of Detroit’s decline came from the city’s water department, when it said in March it would begin shutting off water for up to 3,000 homes and businesses a week in an attempt to stop the utility from sliding even further into debt.

The announcement sparked outrage among activists groups, who say the Detroit Water and Sewerage Department (DWSD) is going after the city’s most vulnerable citizens to shore up its bottom line.

Cool. I just love American Folk Art.

I'd put it on a 4x4 chassis.

Precisely. Just a variation of the NIMBY-syndrome.

These morons call the UN?????????? The UN is the most feckless among the feckless. My advice: stop buying crack long enough to pay your water bill. What a sick society there.

I think water bills should never reflect the cost of anything but water, and maybe sewer, if there is not a separate bill for sewer.

This is the end result of our lowering the import tariffs, and offshoring our industries. Places like Detroit have been hit hard. Nevermind that they are now a hell hole with corrupt politicians and corrupt citizenry.

We’ll all be Detroit if we don’t change course.

What an odd thing. In Detroit, if one doesn’t pay their water bill the water department shuts off their water.

Same thing happens around here. Go figure.

If Detroit did not receive truck loads of cash from outside the city, mostly from white taxpayers, it would collapse totally back into wilderness. Detroit has a 3rd World population only capable of creating and sustaining 3rd World conditions.

We know... but you know the UN is going to scream big humanitarian crisis. They don’t give a qwertyuiop how it got that way — the system is responsibility-free.

Well if the UN wants to take world money and give it to Detroit to pay people’s water bills, I guess it is free to do so.

Detroit can still employ people who turn off water mains??

I thought anything they collected went to retired workers.

Shutting the water off to deadbeats is not a problem, the problem is they haven’t been doing this for so long.

“I guess it’s free to do so.”

Well, I guess you have a point.

Although I don’t consider Detroit to be a humanitarian crises I do consider it to be an American tragedy. A once great American city is a virtual wasteland. And this has happened in our lifetime.

Sign of the times, I guess...sigh.

a whole lot of people in U.N. countries don’t have any water at all.....unless they walk to the river to get it....Detroit residents can get to a river, even a foreign country if they will just walk a few miles!!
