In Mississippi, Jenny Beth Martin and Tea Party Patriots Try to Prove Their Worth
The Washington Post ^ | Sunday June 22, 2014 9:42 p.m. EDT | Ben Terris

Never mind that it’s 92 degrees and nearing the end of the day: Jenny Beth Martin has started jogging between houses.

SNIP

In from Georgia, Martin has been spending much of the past three weeks in the state, holding conferences, making fundraising calls, meeting with local chapters of the tea party, and yes, walking door-to-door to turn out the vote for conservative Senate hopeful Chris McDaniel. But unlike most volunteers here, as the head of the national Tea Party Patriots, a group she co-founded and helped bring to national prominence, she’s on track to make $450,000 this year doing all this, according to the latest Federal Election Commission reports and Internal Revenue Service filings. And to top that off, the group’s latest disclosures also note that she is allowed to travel first-class on any domestic flight she takes as president of the organization — although her lawyer says she doesn’t take advantage of the perk.

SNIP

Martin, 43, acknowledges that the organization did not put any money behind Brat. She says she met with him before the primary to say that they were all in on Mississippi, a marquee race with much better polling. And while she says she has no regrets about the decision, Ingraham’s criticisms clearly stung.

“She didn’t know, she never talked to me,” Martin says after an elderly man shouts from his window to just leave whatever she was handing out by the door. “She was misinformed.”

A few nights earlier, Martin’s communications director, Kevin Broughton, over Coors Light and vodka shots, had been more emphatic.

“When did Laura Ingraham become Chris Matthews?” he asked, smoking a cigarette in one of the last bars in Jackson that allow it. “When did she love to hear the sound of her own voice so much?”

ALL of the so-called national tea party organizations are just like any other sheister. It is all about their ability to raise money, or awareness, for the “cause”. The only problem is that time and again the only real cause is their pockets. I know first hand years ago what Martin promised to those local groups to join her coalition and she never paid off.

I don't begrudge people making money, but that is pretty ridiculous for the head of a political action committee run by volunteers. When you consider that her organization gave $0 to Dave Brat, it makes one suspicious of her motives.

Are the other Tea Party "Leaders" making that kind of money?

Does the Washington Compost ever report what Democrats drink? They never miss a chance to slant an article.

I certainly hope she isn’t in this for the money. There was a thread here on the various TP-related organizations.

The actual money applied to doing something substantive vs. admin and ‘other’ costs was disgraceful for just about ALL of them. The only organization I thought who had reasonable $-to-cause ratios was Club For Growth.

As I said, I have hope. But her last appearance on TV I saw her explaining her non-action with respect to Brat was pitifully weak, and her main defense was MS efforts. We shall indeed see how this fares. I see they are out begging for $$ for MS efforts now.

If SHE doesn’t provide some intrinsic value to conservative struggles and she doesn’t succeed there, then she’s just another overpaid opportunist cheating patriots out of their money.

Hard to say. She and hubby were in financial difficulty at one time. Seems to me she might have latched onto an idea that was very financially beneficial. To me, someone making $450K/year surely must have some capability beyond just spouting conservative concepts on TV.
We shall see her worth in MS. That’s where she’s claiming all the work is going.

Jenny Beth makes over $400k/year from this. I don’t make anywhere close to this kind of coin.

I’m done with TPP. Never again.

Laura Ingraham hasn’t sold out, unlike you Mr. Broughton.

She’s the real deal.

The only “real” Tea Parties” are those that are locally organized and run. Any effort to consolidate is usually driven by someone’s ambitions for political gain or other personal aspirations for money and influence.

I can see why the Washington Post would like to publish as much dirt as they can find re the Tea Party Patriots so as to disillusion the conservatives.

I would also expect to see whisper campaigns against the Tea Party Patriots by Elite Republican Politicians and Media for the same reason to disillusion the conservatives.

I am in favor of close scrutiny of the finances of the various conservative groups that espouse Tea Party ideals.

I hope someone has already made the analysis because I know a lot of people who believe Tea Party Patriots is on their side and they make regular contributions to TPP and volunteer their time.

Give directly to your local tea party organization and/or to candidates of your choice.

Ya know what folks......none of this Washington Post hogwash is meaningful, whatsoever!!! What is meaningful is that Chris McDaniel politically slaughters the new, Low Life, Democrat, Thad Cochran in tomorrows Senate runoff, special election.

Who cares one iota about Jenny Beth Martin....one way or the other??? Folks...we got us a nation to save here...and the voters of Mississippi...all of them including African-Americans that have beenthrown under the bus by “Muslim” Obama, his Democrats, The CBC & NAACP, etc. have an excellent opportunity to send a “massive” political message that will sound out all over the nation...as did the recent devastating, defeat of Eric Cantor in Virginia!!!

Now.....good folks, voters in Ole MS....get out there tomorrow, enmasse, and vote for Chris McDaniels in overwhelming numbers and do something positive for yourselves, your children, your nation!!! DO IT!!!!

She and hubby were in financial difficulty at one time.

So what? Haven't we all?

Just what does she do to EARN $450,000 from the donations of people who entrust that their money will be used to contribute to the cause of liberty?

If everyone who contributes to her organization contributed $10 then it would take the combined contributions of 45,000 loyal Tea Party people just to pay her salary.

Shouldn't the lion's share of that money be going to bolstering candidates and lobbying efforts rather than lining the pockets of her and her "hubby"?

Just askin'

What I’m saying is that I don’t think her efforts warrant her salary or the perks. From what I’ve seen the actual dollars spent constructively for conservatism is justified.

Again, her explanations about her help with Brat was pitiful...

Frankly, I believe it is about the money for her.

I care about it because the TPP is out on the web with a blanket money bomb email campaign at this final critical stage. My concern is that honestly donated $$ for this effort (beat Thad) gets diverted to ‘organizational overheard.’

That’s why it matters.

I know a lot of people who believe Tea Party Patriots is on their side and they make regular contributions to TPP and volunteer their time.

If the quotes about compensation are accurate, then Jenny Beth Martin hasn't volunteered a minute of her time.

I had no idea that she was that well compensated. Just what has her organization really accomplished that she should pay herself so handsomely?

George Washington fought the entire Revolutionary War and did not receive even one red cent (they really were "red" back then) in compensation.

I agree.....but I subscirbe to the “Buyer Beware” way of doing political contribution activity!!! I believe it is up to the individual contributor to learn & know where & who, he or she is contibuting money to. I never donate one cent until I see how the money is distributed!!! Just my way of insuring where and how my money will be spent!!!

Yes. That’s why I depend on spending/admin ratios and on things like personal impressions from interviews. From what I’ve seen of her, I am never going to donate to TPP. There’s just no ‘there’ there except personal enrichment IMO.
