Walmart, the nation’s largest retailer, recently decided to go into the newspaper editing business.
The Arkansas-based company responded to an article from New York Times columnist Timothy Egan, titled “The Corporate Daddy” by doing the work that it felt Egan’s Times editors should have done.
“Thanks for sharing your first draft,” reads a red-inked note from Walmart, which is known more for its low prices than its snark.
“Below are a few thoughts to ensure something inaccurate doesn’t get published,” continued the note, which was posted at Walmart’s blog and is attributed to David Tovar, Walmart’s director of corporate communications.
The retail giant apparently couldn’t resist sarcasm after it found what it considered numerous problems with Egan’s piece in which he criticized the company for paying its 2.2 million employees what he called “humiliating wages.”
“Walmart is a net drain on taxpayers,” wrote Egan in the missive, adding that the company forces “employees into public assistance with its poverty-wage structure.
“We are the largest tax payer in America,” Tovar wrote in his edit. “Can we see your math?”
“We see more associates move off of public assistance as a result of their job at Walmart,” Tovar wrote.
Egan argued that “most advanced nations” look for ways to boost the middle class but that the U.S. had ceased doing that. “Witness the G.I. Bill, which helped millions of returning soldiers get a lift to a better life,” wrote the Times columnist.
“Did you know?” Tovar quizzed. “Walmart has hired more than 42,000 veterans this year.”

It’s about second chances at the margin. It never was supposed to be about luxury. Want luxury, find a job at Neiman-Marcus or something, if you can.
Beware Greeks even when they bear gifts... the limiting factors this writer sees is generalized overpopulation rather than an imbalance, and a blinkered view about energy production potential. (However, at least global warming worries are not being harped on here.)
The Crimes — like so many of its Woodstock-influenced brethren — believes in returning to an artisan/craft economy like in Middle Ages Europe. Big corporations are the enemies of small-scale producers because monoliths can leverage their market positions into economies of scale and keep costs lower than their competitors. That’s what drives the mom-and-pop shoppes out of business.
It’s cruel, but it’s economic Darwinism in action. And it results in noticeably lower prices to consumers.
Crimes?
Oh, that was irony, the Times.
Mom-and-Pops still can find niches. The old fashioned variety store has been superseded by low margin high volume retailers. But that’s not all the things that are attractive to sell.
Walmart could go a long way to increasing the manufacturing in this country by buying more American products.

Timothy Egan, the liberal New York Times reporter turned ultra-liberal columnist, flashed hostility to Wal-Mart (and capitalism in general), as well as a broad ignorance of economics in his latest Sunday Review column, “Corporate Daddy.”
For some time now, Republicans in Congress have given up the pretense of doing anything to improve the lot of most Americans. Raising the minimum wage? They won’t even allow a vote to happen. Cleaner air for all? They may partially shut down the government in a coming fight on behalf of major polluters. Add to that the continuing obstruction of student loan relief efforts, and numerous attempts to defund health care, and you have a party actively working to make life miserable for millions.

New York Times reporter turned left-wing online columnist Timothy Egan riled the right again in his Thursday evening entry, “Right Flight.” Egan, who showed clear liberal slant when he covered the Pacific Northwest for the Times, has previously smeared Rush Limbaugh as like “salt on a slug,” a “clown,” and “a swollen, sweaty man.” On Thursday, Egan claimed Limbaugh “has lost significant advertisers and whatever respect he still had among a handful of decent Republicans” for his remarks about Sandra Fluke (Egan left out Limbaugh’s apology).

I know that every business is worried about pissing off a potential customer, but that single customer that you piss off just might bring in 5 other customers into your store, for seeing that you have the fortitude to stand up for yourself.

Timothy Egan, liberal New York Times reporter turned very liberal Times online columnist, thinks that Americans will be better off when the old, tired, hypertensive Tea Partiers depart the scene for good and let the lively youth take over saving the world, in “Save Us, Millennials,” also featured in Friday’s print edition.
When an electorate is red-faced and fist-clenched, when the collective national blood pressure is 160 over 100, when the big issues of the day are mired in tired minds, it’s time to turn to the great, renewable resource of any vibrant democracy: the kids.
The millennials, that echo boomer generation born after 1982, have not been heard from of late, ever since proving that they could pull away from their Facebook pages long enough to help elect a president.

We’ve been led to believe that the grumpy, the cranky and the bitter will drive the midterm elections in the fall. You would never know, with nightly images of jowly Tea Partiers and their inchoate discontents, that people ages 18 to 29 years old made up a larger percentage of the 2008 electorate than those over 65.
