An email recently released by the House Oversight Committee shows IRS official Sarah Ingram was pretty excited about President Obama publicly speaking out against conservative groups with "secret donors." The email was sent from Ingram to Lois Lerner and others inside the tax agency after a glowing piece was published in the New York Times about the IRS and the trouble it was having with new tax exempt applicants and groups in light of the 2010 Citizen's United ruling.

"The 'secret donor' theme will continue -- see Obama salvo and today's Diane Reeham (sp). At least SS started the idea that we don't have the law to do something," the email reads.

‘We don’t need the law to do something’…

So why isn’t this a smoking gun?

The New York Times article referred to in the email is linked below. The "SS" in the email is Stephanie Strom, a co-writer of the Times article. Also mentioned in the email is "Marcus" who is referred to in the article:

The I.R.S. division with oversight of tax-exempt organizations “is understaffed, underfunded and operating under a tax system designed to collect taxes, not as a regulatory mechanism,” said Marcus S. Owens, a lawyer who once led that unit and now works for Caplin & Drysdale, a law firm popular with liberals seeking to set up nonprofit groups.

Donor Names Remain Secret as Rules Shift

The email clearly shows the IRS had a real cozy relationship with the leftist media and liberal political activists.

What to do now? I'm not sure but I think a repeal of the 16th amendment would be the ultimate goal.

BTW This sort of thing was predicted when Wm J Bryan was pushing the 16th through

“A hand from Washington will be stretched out and placed upon every man's business; the eye of the Federal inspector will be in every man's counting house . . . The law will of necessity have inquisitorial features, it will provide penalties, it will create complicated machinery. Under it men will be hailed into courts distant from their homes. Heavy fines imposed by distant and unfamiliar tribunals will constantly menace the tax payer. An army of Federal inspectors, spies and detectives will descend upon the state . . . Who of us who have had knowledge of the doings of the Federal officials in the Internal Revenue service can be blind to what will follow?”

Virginia House Speaker Richard E. Byrd, 1910, predicting what would happen if a federal income tax became law.

(Reuters) - Two senior Internal Revenue Service executives who were instrumental in the rollout of President Barack Obama’s new healthcare law are retiring, according to an internal IRS memorandum obtained by Reuters on Friday.

Sarah Hall Ingram will step down at the end of April and James Taylor by the end of May, said the memo sent to IRS staff on behalf of IRS Commissioner John Koskinen.
