The District of Columbia Council on Tuesday approved a "yoga tax" on gymnasiums and yoga classes that has angered fitness buffs in the U.S. capital.
The Democratic-controlled council voted 12-1 to give final approval to a $10.6 billion budget for 2015 that included a sales tax on gyms, yoga studios and other athletic businesses, a spokeswoman for Council Chairman Phil Mendelson said.
The budget also includes a substantial income tax cut that would be offset by expanding the existing 5.75 percent sales tax to such services as tanning salons, health clubs, car washes and bowling alleys. The move is expected to raise $5 million a year.
Dubbed the "yoga tax," the proposal has been protested by gym owners and patrons. Dozens of protesters struck yoga warrior poses outside city hall this month and chanted, "Tax Slurpees, not burpees!"
Mayor Vincent Gray, who opposes the tax, must sign the budget for it to take effect on Oct.

Well it could be worse.....We in Maryland have the rain tax.....yep...we are taxed on the rain falling. Marylanders seriously hate God in Heaven......punishing him for making rain and taxing all of good citizens.....yep good citizens....that is because I am in a RED district Maryland 1 baby!!!! Republican all the way in Arnold, Maryland.....IN FACT, today is election day and may entire neighborhood is decked out in GOP or Republican signs EVERYWHERE.....Glen Oban (my community in Arnold Maryland) is the bomb!

Well to save the bay that we already spend billions on every year (at least), O’Malley had the brilliant idea to tax the rain that potentially could pollute the bay through run off from the rain......so they decided that anyone with a driveway, gutters, any semblance of a yard should have to pay a tax due to YOUR POTENTIAL pollution of the bay. It is just plain sick! The average is 4,000 a year (increased yearly - Just starting in July 2014) added on to all the other taxes we are suckered into every year. I swear it is getting MIGHTY close to my paying more to Maryland every year than the Federal Government....no kidding.
They had the rain tax in Colorado Springs for a while but a near revolt and court challenge got rid of that. I guess in Maryland, sounds like a moving truck is needed.

Yoga instructors merely need to agree that yoga is an eastern religion. This shouldn’t be difficult, as practitioners already teach many techniques that can be seen as religious.
