Republicans and Democrats joined hands, swayed side-to-side and sang “We Shall Overcome” during Tuesday’s Congressional Gold Medal ceremony — and it was as awkward as it sounds.
Video of the ceremony, awarding Martin Luther King Jr. and Coretta Scott King Congressional Gold Medals, quickly went viral on social media, with most people stating how “cringe-worthy” the moment was.
“I watched killers being executed by the State of Arkansas. They looked happier and more at ease than this,” National Journal’s Ron Fournier wrote on Twitter.
Pictured holding hands were House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio), House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), Sen. Harry Reid (D-Nev.), Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) and others.

Why award MLK Jr. a Congressional Gold Medal? He was an adulterer who helped begin the huge racial divide of the US that we are now experiencing.
Should have shackled them all right there and frogmarched them to federal penitentiary.
My God that was more downright embarrassing to watch than the Hank Johnson Guam Tipping Over video. Thank God I had the sound turned off.
Some of them looked like ecstatic Jim Jones cultists (Pelosi for example), some looked like dazed cattle, some looked dumber than a box of rocks, some of the leftists looked inconvenienced and a little angry to have to be holding hands with those people, and one or two actually had the decency to look painfully embarrassed.
