But that dead and rotting wood is critical habitat for rare and endangered fungi, insects & other arthropods, molds, and viruses. It is critically important to save that critical habitat. /sarc

Did you know that in the northwest the Forest Service/Fish & Wildlife Service employs hunters to kill barred owls to protect their sub-species cousins, the spotted owl? Barred owls are bigger and more aggressive and can mate with the spotted owl, but if left unchecked will take over their territory. To prevent that, the federal government actually pays hunters to kill those beautiful birds in the interest of preventing spotted owl disappearance. As with windmills killing golden eagles and thousands of other birds each year, the enviro-nutter agenda trumps common sense in so many ways today.
