District: Sorry Kids, No More Birthday Cake In School—Try a Delicious Pencil Instead

A Washington school district is going the extra mile to ensure that fun dies a wretched death: Students will now be prohibited from bringing cupcakes to school to celebrate their birthdays.

The sweet snacks were deemed inappropriate, given the Obama administration's federal health mandates for public schools, according to KIRO 7:

The move is part of an 18-month wellness and nutrition study that started after a new federal wellness policy took effect requiring superintendents nationwide to monitor nutritional standards for students.

The district has gotten three written complaints so far.

Instead of a cupcake, students will now get a pencil or handmade card from classmates.

How fun.

Apparently, some teachers complained that there were simply too many birthdays during certain weeks and the extra sweets made kids rowdy. Okay, but can't they just celebrate some joint birthdays without cutting cake entirely?

Nope, according to Edmonds School District spokeswoman DJ Jakala:

"If the child chooses, the class will sing to them. Like I said, there are instances of personalized cards and they can be first in line," said Jakala.

Just let them eat cake.

Anecdotal story (my adventures in substituting stopped a year ago)

I was at a school where a parent brought in cupcakes for her daughters birthday. It's a tradition in the elementary schools. A nutritionally enlightend teacher tried to prevent the distribution of cupcakes. The culturally enlightend teacher refused to comply. It got so heated a security guard had to separate them.

It was amazing.

Homemade cookies and brownies will be confiscated from children's lunchboxes for their own good.

“Apparently, some teachers complained that there were simply too many birthdays during certain weeks and the extra sweets made kids rowdy.”

Well, actually, they don’t. There’s an article on WebMD that say’s it’s more likely the excitement of a birthday party that makes kids rowdy.

We were not allowed to have parties in school except right before Christmas break. We were not allowed to bring Coke (aka soda) to school either. The only vending machines in the school were forbidden for students and/or in the staff rooms. I don’t know how we survived with so many rules, but they were rules made by our principals.

My daughter’s class had a special snack once a week provided by a student. The teacher usually timed it so that a student’s birthday coincided with their snack week. One week, there were several birthdays AND we were having a party for something. There were 48 cupcakes and banana splits. Those children were standing on the ceiling! They went outside to the playground afterward and played for the rest of the afternoon.

When are the parents going to wake up and throw the bums out? When they can rule stupid on the stupid stuff, they rule stupid on the important stuff.

I think they made a law in Arizona requiring that when a parent brings a treat from home for the whole class, it must be a healthy snack. They give a list of things like bran muffins and Cheez-Its. I would bring nutritious iced cupcakes. Lol. I never had any issues sneaking them to classrooms. Oh and I didn’t sneak. Principals and teachers are happy happy happy when a parent cares enough to bring a treat for students.

Ok, ok, ok...let me see if I understand this correctly...The 1st lady’s only constitutional duty is to have sex with the pre_sent. Correct???

How on earth is she being allowed to dictate to any American what it is they will eat for lunch?

Hey, as long as the kids know that Obama and Nanny Government are responsible for taking away their cupcakes.

Nothing like inspiring kids to rebel against government at a young age!

My son’s school (private Catholic) only allows small, store bought, packaged items. It’s because kids’ birthdays have gotten out of control at school. Moms want to throw parties and it takes away from learning, which is why they’re there to begin with.
