Chicago wins George Lucas museum

“Star Wars” creator George Lucas has selected Chicago over Los Angeles and San Francisco as the future home of his collection of art and movie memorabilia, according to a spokeswoman for the museum.

The museum's board Wednesday is expected to vote on a name change — from the Lucas Cultural Arts Museum to the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art — and destination.

Pending approval by the Chicago Plan Commission, Lucas' institution would be built on what are now parking lots between Soldier Field and McCormick Place and would open in 2018. Architectural renderings will be presented to city officials in early fall, according to a statement from the museum.

The decision to select Chicago reflects both a bungling of the billionaire's legacy project by the board of a national park in San Francisco as well as an aggressive lobbying effort by Mayor Rahm Emanuel.

A nice win for the Windy City. The statistics on the number of tourists is interesting.

Nice place for it too, if Lucas moves the parking lots underground as the article suggests.

The Presidio, a very large piece of land in San Francisco (a former civil war army base) would have been a terrific situs for this, and Geo Lucas worked with the dweebs who run the Presidio for many, many years. They probably pissed him off one too many times, and made him change the very nice, neo-classic and tasteful design at least three times. Too bad, so sad.

Chicago? Why? Los Angeles makes more sense.

Oh well, at least I’m more likely to go to Chicago than LA.

As are many people, evidently. The Chicago museum complex is pretty hard to beat, and this will add something really distinctive.

So what? Chicago deserves it? Not in a hundred years. The fool on the hill comes from the shooting capitol of the US. We should celebrate this? What a joke.

Those statistics are complete bull***, like everything else out of Rahm’s mouth.

Hey, listen . . . if I want to build a museum (to my own work, but that’s a different story), I have to keep an eye on who the rest of the schlubs in this country voted into the Oval Office?

If I'm in the area I'd stop by for the American Graffiti memorabilia.

They couldn’t put the George Lucas museum in the presidio anyway- that’s where starfleet academy is going to be starting in the 22nd century.

Does anyone who isn't a Chicagoan realize that Lucas would be better off, and safer, building his museum in Baghdad or Kabul?

Anyone who goes to Mosul-By-The-Lake will be able to participate in the Clone Wars, up close and personal, in the parking garage.

I offer, in evidence: Second City Cop

Chicago is a big place, and I can see that you’ve never been there.

I live in the Chicago area. Downtown Chicago is pretty safe. There are many high-rise residential buildings mixed in with all the commercial office towers. That along with all the things to do make downtown Chicago pretty nice. One of the slogans for Chicago is a City of Neighborhoods. And when u leave downtown, some of those neighborhoods are pretty dangerous. It’s just that downtown is relatively safe and affluent.
