There are suggestions that Bergdahl may have helped his Taliban buddies to anticipate US small-unit tactics and so more soldiers died. I don’t know how they could clear him of this allegation so quickly, except that the allegation was never formally made.
There was a report that the Army appointed a general officer to oversee the investigation. I’ll bet that the good-general decided to kick this one charge to see how well-received his action would be. If this ignites a fire-storm he’ll have to seriously consider the desertion & fraternization charges. If, on the other hand, this decision is greeted with a collective shrug he can dismiss the rest of the charges after a decent interval.
General officers in the US Army are very risk-averse.

I was in the Army for 20 years. For 16 and 1/2 of those years I worked in the Criminal Law Section of various Army JAG offices. I worked on hundreds of cases in my career with Army attorneys. IF, and I say IF, five of his fellow soldiers said he WALKED away and DESERTED his post, then YES friend, he is guilty of AWOL in the least. IF he walked over and joined the enemy, in my humble opinion that is TREASON for a serving soldier to desert. I said nothing about made up crap. I am saying that it is reported that his fellow soldiers said he wanted to leave, join the enemy, quit his post, ect, etc. THAT to me says desertion in the FACE OF THE ENEMY. I have been in military law long enough to know that testimony of these five soldiers whom said he deserted are solid if this is what is reported they said, and several of them have been on TV and said it. So that is good enough for me. There is nothing being made up as you so say.
