Public School Awards Show features Foul Language, Crude Humor and Sex Toys

We don’t need any more evidence that our nation has fallen into moral degradation and grotesque debauchery… but we have it.

Parents whose children attend Bellingham High School in Bellingham, Washington were appalled when they attended their children’s end of school year drama awards ceremony. The ceremony was filled with foul language, crude humor and sex toys (given as prizes to a couple of students)! If you’ve ever been an educator, you might at this point be wondering if this was a student led and student written assembly. That could explain some of the vile nature of the program… but you’d be disappointed. The assembly was led by drama teacher Teri Grimes, and she also happened to be the originator of some of the foul language and crude humor at the event.

In an email to KOMO News, the upset mother complained about the teacher's use of profanity during the ceremony. She said Grimes repeatedly used inappropriate words and told a distasteful joke.

"I sat there with my mouth open in shock and the final straw was when a joke was told on stage about a teacher, a lawyer and a priest on a plane. The plane was going down and the teacher says we have to save the children. The attorney says "F*** the children!" and the priest says "OOOOH... Do we have time for that???" the email reads.

Not only was some of the humor detestable – much of the rest of the awards show was too.

In addition to what she considered to be offensive language and the off-color joke, the parent said the awards handed out during the ceremony weren't appropriate for children. She said one of the categories was for "the horniest stud," where the award was a sex toy.

"WE need to get the word out there that THIS is the kind of TRASH that is being taught in our schools. I am so shocked right now I am in tears," the parent said in her email to KOMO.

The teacher is set to retire, so there is likely not much that the district can do to rectify the situation. But the school’s principal said that he had a constructive meeting with both the teacher and the drama students and that all parties involved expressed a great deal of remorse and contrition. For her part, Ms. Grimes issued an apology for the revolting nature of the humor at the event.

"I deeply apologize for some very inappropriate comments and actions made during our drama students' end-of-the-year awards ceremony. This is not representative of our students who take such great pride in their school and respect one another. Much of the evening was a great celebration of their work. However, as a teacher and the club's leader, I take full responsibility and am extremely sorry.”

It’s good that she apologized but doesn’t the situation beg the question – how could a veteran teacher who is set to retire think that this might have been acceptable behavior? And does this represent the kind of behavior, language and humor that has been on display in her classroom over her years as a teacher? If I were a parent in the district I would be angry and concerned that my child had sat under someone with such poor judgment and weak morality.

Exactly. If I had children, I would either have them in a doctrinally-sound private religious school or home school the kids.

Unfettered, indiscriminate, casual, remorseless violence in movies and video games bothers me a lot more than normal sex.

There were certainly at least faculty advisors associated with this. Who’s to say they weren’t getting their jollies off. This would seem to me to constitute child sexual abuse, which if borne out, would see these so-called teachers fired and forced to register as child sex offenders for the rest of their lives.

You don’t give sex toys to minors and not be considered a sex offender of some sort.

And when this generation is old enough, and are teachers themselves, they will be producing adult videos as part of art class!

Probably because she has gotten away with it for years. Makes one wonder what else she has said and done with her "drama" students.

Exactly!

The same standard for the general public is the **same** standard that should apply to teachers and principals.

If an certain act or event would result in legal action against a member of the general public then it should result in criminal charges against teachers and principals, too!
